How did trunks defeat the androids if he hadn't done it yet by the time he became a teen?

I guess the question is when does cell wake up. And when does he kill trunks to steal the time machine, before or after trunks already went to the alternate universe when the z warriors were still alive?

Three timelines
1. Goku dies. Awful future.
2. Trunks goes back to the past, cures Goku. Trunks dies and Cell escapes to the past.
3. Trunks goes back to past, attempts to cure Goku, Cell interrupts the android fight.

Trunks went bak in time and changed the timeline. They defeat the androids, Cell never appears, Bulma builds remotes that turns off the androids that he takes back to the future and turns off the androids.
Cell awaks, the androids are gone, he sneaks up on Trunks when he is ready to go back in time to tell how things went, Cell kills him and goes back in time, changing the timeline once again to the one we see in the manga/anime. Trunks gets stronger, Cell is defeated, the androids is left alive, Trunks goes back to the future, destroys the future androids with pure strength, kills future Cell before he is able to steal the timemachine.

Cyborg frieza and king cold still show up to earth right? So we'll say goku beats them, then gets the heart virus and dies a few months before the androids show up? After which it is what's known as the trunks timeline?

Sidenote I like to think the heart virus thing goku gets is something he got in space like a rare deadly virus on one of the many planets in the universe.

According to Trunks, it actually seems to be a "new" Earth virus that just kills a bunch of people anyway, and Goku dies before a cure is made. lol

The actual origin is never determined. It could be natural or Gero.

Cell gets his information via the robot bugs that fly around and spy on everything for Gero and him. So he would have the information of the time machine.

Timeline 1: Goku dies from heart virus, androids show up and kill everyone. Trunks returns to the past, creating Timeline 2.

Timeline 2: Trunks shows up, gives Goku the heart virus cure, then returns to Timeline 1. Trunks returns after 3 years, androids show up, fight ensues. No exact story of what happened, but most likely Bulma creates the shut-off device and they use it to destroy the androids. Trunks returns to Timeline 1 once again with the shut-off device.

Timeline 1 (part 2): Trunks uses the shutoff device to stop the androids. Cell is created, and cannot locate the androids. Trunks is preparing for a final trip to the past to tell his friends he won, when Cell interrupts and steals the time machine. He returns 1 year before Trunks's original trip, creating Timeline 3.

Timeline 3: Normal DBZ Timeline. Cell shows up first, drastically changing events from the future. Because Cell is here, Trunks get's drastically stronger in the ROSAT, creating a different outcome for Timeline 1 when he returns (AKA Timeline 4)

Timeline 4: Trunks's timeline, he defeats the androids and Cell.

Then we have Goku Black showing up and making things even more convoluted...

Good point. So that's how he finds them, probably one day while trunks was tinkering on the time machine cell sneaks behind him and kills him etc.

Also you ever think about the fact that gero never did see his "greatest creation" come to fruition. He never even saw cell. Wonder how that meeting would go. Probably glad that cell takes care of 17 and 18 if they had rebelled against him.
