The Pet Battle mini game in world of Warcraft is actually kinda fun but it is a huge rip off of Pokemon. I'm surprised they didn't have legal problems

Using that string of logic you could ask why Enix didn't sue Nintendo for copying Dragon Quest's turn based battles. Then why Wizards of the Coast didn't sue Enix for copying DnD's mechanics, and so on etc.

yes. the only major difference is you can only have a team of 3 instead of 6. but yea it works pretty much like pokemon

Probably because Wizards of the Coast didn't own D&D back then.

I think the original DnD company was called TSR. I don't remember what it stood for. they were bought out by Wizards of the Coast. but until like the early 2000's I think, or maybe late 90's, all DnD stuff said TSR on it.

You cannot copyright something as broad as game mechanics, this is why PUBG backed down from the Fortnite lawsuit and this is why RPGs cannot sue each toher for being turn based, even monster collecting as a mechnic has been done over and over in videogames, how is this not super obvious to people?

this si why we have something called GENRES, ya know a subset of games with similar mechanics >_>

Pokemon didn't invent monster collecting. As far as I'm aware dragon quest 5 did it first, though it was optional.

Megami Tensei for the NES was one of the earliest monster collecting games. There were also many others after that.

Nintendo and Game Freak didn't invent the Monster-collecting subgenre of RPGs.

Atlus beat them to the punch nearly a decade earlier with the very first Shin Megami Tensei game, Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei.
