Tennessee convicted child rapist and killer on Wednesday picked a deluxe burger combo as his last meal before his execution -- the first in the state in nearly a decade.

Billy Ray Irick, 59, chose the deluxe combo that included a super deluxe burger, onion rings and a Pepsi soft drink, the Tennessee Department of Correction said Wednesday. Irick, who is being held at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, will eat his last meal before his execution, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday.

Billy Ray Irick, on death row for raping and killing a 7-year-old girl in 1985, appears in a Knox County criminal courtroom in Knoxville, Tenn., arguing that he's too mentally ill to be executed by the state. The Tennessee Supreme Court has refused to stay Thursday's Aug. 9, 2018, scheduled execution of the convicted child killer while the state's new lethal injection protocol continues to be challenged on appeal. The order brings Tennessee within days of killing Irick with a three-drug cocktail, barring some last-minute change.

Billy Ray Irick was convicted in the 1985 rape and murder of 7-year-old Paula Dyer. (AP)

The name of the restaurant that prepared the meal was not released out of an abundance of caution, the department said.

Death row inmates are given a $20 limit to spend on their last meal, the Tennessean reported.

Irick was convicted in the 1985 rape and murder of 7-year-old Paula Dyer, who he was babysitting.

The convicted killer is expected to receive a three-drug injection on Thursday. If Irick is executed, it will be the first Tennessee has applied the death penalty since 2009.

Irick exhausted all his appeals since being convicted and continued over the years to challenge the drugs Tennessee officials used in lethal injections for death row inmates.

On Monday, the state Supreme Court denied a stay of Irick's execution, saying a lawsuit filed by inmates contesting the execution drugs being used wasn't likely to succeed.

Maybe this is state-specific? I know there are some famous killers who ate more expensive stuff than that.

The whole concept of the "last meal" offered to death row inmates always makes me profoundly sad and sits with me pretty poorly. It's something they enjoyed, some piece of the outside world, often something they have nostalgia for, simpler/better times. It's extremely humanizing, which you can argue is a good or bad thing with criminals like this, but either way is in stark contrast with the entire concept of the death penalty. Like, "here's one more good, enjoyable, pure thing before we kill you." I dunno. It's just eerie to me.

I'm not even saying anything for or against the death penalty here, it's just the cognitive dissonance that always jars me a bit.

This kind of shit is what people are talking about when they say "the death penalty costs too much". As soon as they can no longer challenge the criminal charge itself, that should be it, end of story, you don't see the end of that day. Fuck being able to contest technicalities about the process just to stall your sentence. >_>

My logical problem with lethal injection is best summed up by George Carlin: "In prisons, before they give you a lethal injection, they swab your arm with alcohol! Well, you can see their point. You wouldn't want some guy to go to Hell and be sick! It would take a lot of the sportsmanship out of the execution."

It's kinda mandated they get a few appeals at state level and at least one at supreme court level.

But I agree when it's an open and shut case and beyond a reasonable doubt among the jurors and that it's proven beyond circumstantial evidence it should be done quick
