Didn't the Mel Gibson thing come first?

These days he would get invited on an alt-right podcast to talk about the world being too politically correct.

The guy basically admitted he had a breakdown too. That story never felt like a divisive one back then. It sure would now.

Considering he said things that absolutely no one wouldn't consider racist, yes it would be different. There would be no debate, for one. This sort of thing thrives on overly sensitive people trying to convince everyone that someone is a secret racist.

Also different is the fact that he slinked back into the shadows after the apology. He knew the best thing to do was to try and be forgotten instead of attempting damage control.

Plus it was clearly a heated situation that got way too emotional and not like a premeditated and calculated Twitter post. He was being heckled about being a has-been and it hit too close to home so he needed something to fire back with. The only thing he could use was his race. And yes, there's definitely some racism in him for that option to be in his arsenal, even if it takes some serious emotion to bring it out.

A good comedian can joke or embarass someone into quieting down.

Michael Richards didnt know how to shut down hecklers or people being a nuisance, instead he got into an argument and spiraled into a racist tirade.

Remember when senfield yelled at the audience for laughing at his apology, like he was their father or something?

I still laugh at the fact that Mel Gibson said "I hope you get raped by a pack of N-words" in that tirade, lolololol!!

so much foulness in one line, but so ridiculous that it's hilarious. fucking Mel.

He didn't yell at them. I kinda agree with both sides, though. Seinfeld, and the audience. On one hand, Seinfeld was right, it wasn't meant to be a funny moment. Laughing was making light of what they were trying to do. On the other hand, for the audience, it was an unusual change of pace for a typical Letterman show, and I can't blame them for eliciting a few awkward, quiet laughs. It was a strange place to bring up the incident.

But, you know, you can't see any middle ground in today's day and age. _

Just making sure if I remember it right but Jerry on Letterman along with a video call from Richards was the first response to the whole thing right?

Yeah that was a weird way to handle it. I think overall Richards handled the situation the best he could really. He was extremely apologetic and he disappeared for a while.

You still can't tell at people. You're not my father, fuck off dude. With that said, yeah there shouldn't have been laughing.

... Yeah, things would go exactly the same as they did then. What is with this forum and pretending that today is way more thin skinned than a few years ago? The only difference is that nowadays you don't have to watch the 6 o'clock news to see what is being protested.
