I hate getting called out for it. Usually by accident. Shouldn't we be celebrating the fact that we have many cultures around is, instead of letting it divide us?

All I know is that every song written and rapped by a white guy needs to have a line somewhere about how white people didn't create rap, black people did and how thankful they are to be able to be a part of and profit from something created by a culture not their own. Is that really too much to ask?

It's a complaint so devoid of substance that it's not even worth the energy needed to accuse someone.

I take a nuanced approach

White person with dreads? Bad
White person in dashiki? Probably bad unless they're actually from the appropriate region wherein that outfit would be one they'd acquired normally
White person wearing a kimono shirt from forever 21? Totally fine and they come in a half dozen varieties, up from the two or three they had last year
White person dressing "ghetto"? Bad if they criticize black people for being violent, aggressive, rude, etc, okay if the white person doesn't actively discriminate against people of color or "the ghetto" and whatnot

And as you can see, it's one of those things only white people can do, like racism.

Its bullshit in 99% of the times its been used. But there is indeed actual cultural appropriation that exists. I'll explain it if anyone actually does want to know.

apparently native americans take grave offense at people calling things their "spirit animals". apparently in native american culture, a spirit animal is something you have to train for years and years to connect with. it's a massive part of their culture and heritage. so when people just blindly say things like "your dog is my spirit animal!" apparently that's cultural appropriate in the worst degree and majorly offensive.

I think a major issue is the fact that people can only say "natie Americans" and never name any of the remaining tribes that had such concepts.

I only really have a problem when it's flagrant profiteering with no respect to the original culture - like when you see some white businessman with a stall at a music festival selling imitation native headdresses which other white people are going to buy and wear as a novelty for two days them chuck in a rubbish bin.

If someone wants to have a particular hairstyle or wear a type of clothing for their own personal choice, though, who am I to judge them?

cultural appropriation is a bunch of bullshit. when I went back to my parents native country of Trinidad for the first time in my life during carnival season, there were a bunch of white dudes playing mass and all the natives..didnt give a fuck. i also know for certain that our culture enjoys when more people are exposed to and enjoy our festivities so yeah

cultural appropriation is bullshit

Cultural appropriation isn't a sin. I often appropriate cultural recipes for my own pleasure. I cook it with glee and eat it with joy and boy, oh boy, you should hear the inconsiderate moans and sighs of pleasure just OOZING from my white body. They ooze in more ways than one.

really nothing wrong with it. no culture owns the idea of braiding your hair into dreadlocks, or the idea of jewelry. now you should give credit to culture that first invented these ideas, but ultimately they don't get to own a patent on them.

But when something happens like when Disney tried to trademark "Dia de Muertos," that's a real problem.

It's a bullshit excuse to get mad at white people.

People learn from one another. They adopt practices from one another. A person really can't say that music, food, or clothing is rightfully exclusive to one ethnic group.

The worst offenses of cultural appropriation are in music. It has killed R&B music in the mainstream and has closed doors for singers from certain countries when white mainstream singers just jack their style of music.
