It's a thing I've been trying to do for years and I always get sidetracked.

Figure it'd be a good skill to pick up.

Well now I have the time to get into it. Any good tutorials or stuff to check out?

What are you trying to do? You just want a job coding lines, you trying to build a phone app, you interested in working on a video game, you trying to pioneer some bartending order machine, you wanna do some web css? Its a pretty broad spectrum if you are starting out, some specifics would better guide you to useful and interesting information.

The .net language is pretty new and easier than some of the older/other languages. But each language has its ups and downs for what you want to accomplish. Probably Java if you want to do any android appbuilding, SQL is another language you might want to look into for all around programming for its database stuff.

Idk.. It's really more task specific than a general go-to language.

Knowing basic SQL is also great for Android, though it doesn't come up too often I'd say (also while you should know Java, Kotlin is a better language for Android)

Hackerrank has a lot of good step by step tutorials, as well as tricky puzzles. That and googling documentation should get you started.

Python to learn the fundamentals if you don't know them already

If you have a job in a company that uses Windows at all, PowerShell is a godsend.

HTML/CSS/JavaScript, And any (one) of the back-end web languages like PHP/Python/ASP.NET, and MySQL if you want to learn web application development (everything is going web based nowadays)

In regards to tutorials, Learn Python The Hard Way is a good place to start for free.

Codeacademy is easy and fun.

With programming think about what kind of applications you'd want to use it for, and then figure out the types you'd need to get there.

SQL and HTML are a good place to start I think because they're very intuitive and get you to think like a programmer.

Puked a little in my mouth. I know you're right, but PowerShell is so weird and horrible.

Start with Python. Any resource is good, just make sure you're working on some version of Python 3 as you learn so the code isn't stale and you'll be good. Python is used in just about every except embedded systems so you'll get plenty of use out of it for hobby projects no matter what you decide to do. It's also hot with employers and easier and faster to learn than many other languages.

Python is basically the result of if Basic and Ruby had an unprotected drunken romp, followed by a botched abortion. Yeah, it's popular, but it honestly SUCKS.
