10. Yuna (Final Fantasy X)

The Good: Yuna is a wonderful character. She has one of my favorite designs in the series. I generally dont use summons or summoners much in Final Fantasy, but shes the exception. I like the way FFX uses summons compared to other games, and I like her unique animations with how she interacts with her aeons. Plus, you can cheese a lot of storyline bosses by stacking up aeon Overdrives, and theres nothing quite as satisfying in the post-game than hearing the tink of Yunas staff and seeing 5 digits of damage. She has a great relationship with Tidus, and they are easily the best couple in the series. Stay with me until the end. Please. Not until the end. Always. So good.

The Bad: I actually like Final Fantasy X-2 more than most (I got the Perfect Ending, which requires a 100% file and was totally not worth all the time that took based on the quality of said ending), but Yuna is not a reason why. Whether shes getting jealous over Lenne or somehow considering Rikku the role model of who she should aspire to be, its just hard to believe this is the same girl from FFX. I can almost forgive that aspect of it because maybe theres a part of her that wants to be a normal girl now and she has no real idea of what being normal means, but the inexcusable part is at the end where she talks at length about how she regrets what she did at the end of FFX. That should never have happened.

The Best: And this aspect of Yuna in Final Fantasy X is exactly why its inexcusable. The best part of Yunas character is her resolve to bring an end to Sin, no matter what it takes. Theres literally a song in the game called Yunas Determination for a reason (eat your heart out, Undertale). Even when everything shes known and believed in crumbles around her, Yevon turns against her, and Tidus even offers her the easy way out, she wont take it. When the time comes to make her choice about the Final Aeon, her speech to Yunalesca is so great. Everyone focuses on Aurons speech before the battle (and for good reason), but Yunas speech is excellent because it puts her resolve on full display. Once again, she refuses to take the easy way out. It would be so easyto let my fate carry me awayfollowing this same path my whole life through. But I knowI cant. What I do, I dowith no regrets.

I'll admit I don't remember every detail about X and X-2 anymore, but that big flaw you mentioned about Yuna was one of my favorite things about her and I viewed it as a solid conclusion to her character arc.

Yuna was so willing to sacrifice herself, and Tidus kept arguing that was stupid and there had to be a better way. Then in the end Tidus basically sacrifices himself. It bugged me that no one ever really called him out on the hypocrisy, so it was great seeing Yuna have that revelation in X-2 and truly struggling to find a solution with no sacrifices.

Nah, it's bad. The ending to FFX with her speech in the stadium was the right conclusion to her character arc. You can be sad he's gone and wish he were still around, but going back on what made her so great in FFX was a bad decision.

No, Tidus said it was not worth it if Sin just comes back anyway. Tidus did sacrifice himself but he did it in a way that would get rid of Sin forever. So it's not hypocrisy

I don't quite remember when he learned specific details (like, did he learn about the sacrifice at one point and that it was temporary at another or did he learn about both at once?) but I don't think Tidus would have been okay with a Yuna sacrifice even if it would solve the problem forever. He was vehemently against the idea.

I think hypocritical isn't the right word.

Once he found himself in the position Yuna was in, he probably actually changed his mind to respect her decision. He doesn't try to stop anything about it until the reveal that Sin was guaranteed to come back anyway from Yunalesca.

Or he's just doing the standard good guy thing of "it's ok if I get hurt, but not you!"

Tidus stopped trying to stop her once he realized she was going through with it no matter what. He just wanted to find another way. But once Yunalesca reveals everything, Yuna herself is also totally against it, so he doesn't have to stop her.
