I remember that being a huge issue years ago. Where drives would die after 12 months and you would lose everything, 18 if you were touched by the grace of God.

Not that I'm aware of. I mean - some brands are more prone to failure overall, but the big name ones are generally reliable excepting the occasional bad batch of drives.

I've been using the same 2TB external for eight years and it's fine. It's just for data archival (games, music, etc.) so it only gets powered on when I need to move a big batch of stuff, then it's unplugged and back in the drawer. Just got a 4TB to replace it, but that's only because 2TB isn't big enough anymore.

Only problem I had with hard drives was when I unwittingly bought a 500 gig harddrive for my old 360 that wasn't an official model and crapped out like a year later. God damnit China

I used a portable one instead and it's been fine for years

No, I've never had an external die on me. I still have a working WD 500GB external HDD that I'm pretty sure has that crappy Green drive that regularly died in it. That thing is probably about 10 years old. I wouldn't use it for critical data, but it's still fine as a backup drive.

Do any of y'all have Seagate? Because that's what I'm looking at online and the review section is loaded with people bitching about how it died after a month.

I've had one to backup important stuff dating back about eight years to when I got it for huge college projects.

Was still working fine a few months back when I put some stuff on on it...

yeah i was about to post "stop buying seagate drives". they are awful. if you put a bit of coin into your HDD instead of buying bottom shelf it'll last. always been like that.

is it more or less always disconnected? the issue arises when you use it for things like extended space for PS4/Xbox, or keeping it constantly connected to a PC.

I've had a Seagate for over a year and no problems. Although recently, I've noticed the drive is running even when it's not being accessed, so I keep it unplugged unless I need it. Figured I'd extend the life of it that way.
