They look for hemorrhaging, trauma, loss of consciousness, etc. If the patient is fully conscious, answering questions, looks stable and vitals are good, they're generally going to yield to a patient's request to refuse treatment.

Obviously the right choice of action was to rush her to the hospital, but hindsight is 20/20 - for every one case with this outcome there were probably hundreds of cases where nothing happened. It's easy to chastise after the outcome, but in the heat of the moment things aren't so clear.

That said, vitals due to stroke are often normal. If you're at the point where you have hypertension and bradycardia, omae wa mo shindeiru.

I told people not to take an ambulance ride all the time. They'd feel sick and assume they had a brain tumor or some shit-- literally every call someone on scene has "diagnosed" the issue. And they're always wrong. It costs about $500-$1000 WITH most insurance to take an ambulance ride. If you're not gonna die on the way there, there's no point. Medics are trying to help you out here.

My only other defense of them is she "had swollen lips". Well they've never seen this lady before in her life, and I'm not kidding when I say the family just stands there like a bunch of headless chickens once you start asking questions. "Do her lips normally look like this?""uhhh, idk" *sigh*

In the end yes, they missed a brain bleed, which may not present with immediate symptoms depending on the type.

This family is just looking for someone to blame when in reality the lady just died from a stroke and probably only would have been saved if it happened to her in the hospital.

Not that money can make up for this situation, but holy hell should they get some damages from this in court.

That's utterly insane behavior by the EMTs, and just another indication of a truly broken health care system in the US.

Look up the EMTALA law. There is a law in play to prevent this exact situation from happening. This sounds like a major lawsuit.

Yeah the Chinese model is better, where if a patient can't pay the hospital actually deducts the cost from the physician's salary.

Also, China has a real problem with patients killing physicians for not paying for their medical care. But I'm sure the two aren't related.

That sounds so capitalist I'm surprised America hasn't given this a go. What a way to cut costs!
