In a limited 3-4 party battle system sure, but if you have a bigger crew you know that you want some red mages around as they would be hella useful to have around.

red mages are amazing early to mid game where they heal as good as a white mage, deal magic damage as good as a black mage and deal physical damage as well as a fighter

They're definitely more useful in the tactics style games where having a bunch of powerful characters with relatively little resources is better than a few ultra powerful ones that take huge investments.
That said, some of the Final Fantasy mainstream games have found ways to make them more useful. The aforementioned Final Fantasy 5 for example. --- i am truley sorry for your lots ... Copied to Clipboard!
