That he was able somehow fly under the radar when being hired by Disney.

He still posted them and has been lucky to have gotten away with more than 10 years of work.

Its ridiculous that so many 'progressives' try to give him a pass when they've yelled at and demanding firings for so many others for the same thing.

He was hired for being himself, which includes posting those twitters.

We should probably just fire everyone, as we've probably all said or laughed at an edgy joke when younger.

Disney is a bunch of hypocrites.
- They don't care about Jonny Depp's well known shenanigans
- They ignore RDJ's past drug, alcohol, and sex problems (though this is fair)
- They let Chris Hemsworth do that Lampoon's movie where he shows his "dick" (it was a prosthetic)

I think their rule of "You're a Disney representative: if anything comes out that tarnishes our image, you're done." Is a fair one, but they need to either apply it to everyone or no one. Don't just use it as a quick and lazy excuse to avoid some uproar.

I see this getting compared to Roseanne though and I don't really get it. These are all things said by Gunn 6 years ago. And they're jokes. Roseanne was saying stupid shit in the present. I don't think she should have necessarily been fired either, but it's not the same as Gunn's situation.

Firing him seems a but extreme tho.
He obviously was joking, but some did cross the line.
Also he can't pretend he was young and dumb like he was a teenager or in his 20s, dude was in his 40s when he made those tweets (hes in his 50s now).
At the least maybe he shoulda deleted that shit a while ago.
But I do agree as the left usually act unforgiving if its a tweet that's slightly racist or homophobic.

So both sides tend to act the same way with what they find offensive.

I hate this shit tbqh. I liked Guardians of the Galaxy so it sucks ass.

But...James Gunn literally got hit with this as he was doing it to some other random dude on Twitter so he kind of deserves it.

Roseanne was making extremely racist comments in the present. The witch hunt was stupid, but she shouldnt have been doing that as a public face. Gunn wasnt, as you said, it was a long time ago. It was also nowhere near as offensive.

I think hostile public reactions to comedy is stupid in general. The context of humor matters, and simply joking about sensitive material isnt some horrible act just because it makes some people uncomfortable. There should be a line between shit like Roseanne and Kathy Griffin and shit like Daniel Tosh and James Gunn. This black and white view (NOTHING IS OKAY) is untenable and the people who actually get themselves worked up into a righteous fury need to get a grip.

There's a difference between Comedy, and saying grossly offensive shit and calling it Comedy.
Just sayin.

Thats completely subjective, and your peace of mind doesnt override the right of someone to be offensive. The context matters, because theres humor, and then theres humor that advocates hate, racism, violence, etc. If you cant tell the difference between that and something thats merely in bad taste, youre going to live in an exceptionally hostile world of your own design.

Kind of shitty you can be fired for some edgy jokes that you made on Twitter well before you were hired. The difference between this guy and some mainstream edgelord like Daniel Tosh is in the competence of their joke delivery, so it seems a bit rude to fire someone for what is essentially incompetence in something that isn't even their job. Also, the apparent requirement for Disney's employees to retroactively adhere to the vague morality of PR-sensitive invertebrates is fucking stupid. This predictable response is easily manipulated by classless churls like Mike Thernovich, furthering Hollywood's status as the perfect battleground on which fucking idiots can hold their ideological proxy wars.

Don't fuck up my movies with your dumbshit PR posturing.
