In ages past: "I wish to explore the world of academia to enlighten myself unto this world's history and undertake scholarly research pursuits"

Now: "I wish to get through this bullshit with a degree in whatever so I at least have a shot at a job that keeps me above the poverty line."

I'm pretty sure it was never that way in your lifetime.

The scope of jobs that college is required for has broadened, but even when my parents were going to college, getting a degree wasn't just for personal edification.
