What is your methodology? In NYC for example, just walking on one block you can come across 5 homeless people. You obviously wouldn't give to every person.

If I have cash on hand (and I usually don't), and I feel compelled to give it to someone on the spur of the moment, I just do it. I have a strategy and I don't worry about everyone else I didn't give to in that particular moment. I'm not made of money and I can't help everyone all the time, but I will do a little here and there, simple as that.

As a society, it would be wonderful if we put some meaningful effort into ending extreme poverty and homelessness in the richest country in the world (just talking about the US now), since we certainly have the resources. As an individual, I do not have those resources.

I live in a city where there is lots of homeless. It really depends. There have been times where I've seen people eating out of the trash and I'll take them and buy them food. Honestly the homeless are just people.

I have no methodology except just trusting myself.

I generally don't give to the homeless unless I feel they're working for it. I'll give a dollar to a guy playing the trash can or telling bad jokes but if he's just laying down and begging I'm not giving him anything.

I don't give to beggars. The portion of my income that I choose to give away will not be spent like that.

I don't. I'm not gonna give large bills, and I need all my ones and quarters for bus fare. Nickels and dimes, though I rarely I get them, also get used for the bus. Pennies I just toss on the ground. I did give a homeless dude a few beers a few weeks ago because when he asked for change, I said "I need it for the bus" and he replied "I need it for beer" and I happened to have a 12 pack and I was in a good mood so I gave him a few.

I never give them money.

Things may be different from town to town, but the only people who sleep in public or go hungry are people who choose to do so. Why? Because some of them (for WHATEVER reason) dont want to show their IDs at the shelter.

Basically, theres a 100% chance the ones sleeping in public are either on the run or have enemies in the homeless community. Ive heard cops explain this. I will see Facebook posts by cops where they get people with $300-400+ who had only been there for a couple hours. Think about how much work free, tax free money they are making.

Why on earth would I give MY money to somebody who makes $300/hr? They dont need food because thats covered. Same goes with medicine, clothes, and shelter. Youre literally buying them cigarettes, beer, and whatever else they want (maybe fast food or lottery tickets).

I've been burned by that before. So I don't do it anymore.

Same with door-to-door people. Got scammed out of like 20 or 30 bucks or something because someone was supposedly selling magazine subscriptions. He didn't care he was stealing from a kid. So now regardless of what it is, my response is a firm "No thank you," followed by an aggressive "Get the fuck out of here" if they don't leave.
