if you're going to be involved in an attack against your own will you're better off being hurt with something that provides you a better chance to live than an instant death. Yea, i understand that a knife can deal instant blows but imagine if this guy had a gun. he ran through a panicked train and stabbed 14 people. now imagine he just had to stand at one end of it and open fire one by one. You don't think the casualty count would be higher? This has nothing to do with what side you stand on on the gun rights issue. to argue that a gun in this situation would have been better for these victims because "it hurts less" its incredibly ignorant and idiotic.
