And than plays that event straight later on? If its scattered and vague, too lacking in context or some other way of giving us a hook without a foregone conclusion making a lot of the lead up potentially pointless.

Its a little better if justified in story as an actual premonition or part of a multi path story that can be possibly averted by your choices or something like those. Depending on how its played they can salvage and maybe even make the whole thing good but a lot of times its just like what was the damn point of showing that besides as a cheap marketing hook?

For example Boruto opens up with Konoha destroyed, Naruto dead, Boruto with some new dojutsu and a new Villian Kawaki who is responsbile
for this claiming the era of shinobi is over

And than they go Oh yeah but thats several years from now

Yeah, not a fan. I usually hate prequels for similar reasons.
