The Switch's biggest advantage is that the last generation of consoles (360/PS3) don't look all that much worse than current gen consoles - the diminishing returns were far more apparent this time around. The major differences mainly came in the form of higher resolutions. A lot of end-era PS3 games in particular would still be considered good-looking current gen games (Last of Us, Uncharted 3, etc).
So in comes the Switch, which is several times more powerful than last-gen consoles, and it seems to consistently punch above its weight in terms of game ports (Doom, Wolfenstein 2, Crash, etc). So the question becomes - are you willing to make relatively minor sacrifices in graphics for added portability? I'd assume a lot of people would actually say yes. I'd rather buy the Switch version of a game over the PS4 version if the differences really boil down to nitpicking resolution and frame rate differences.
