Got ourselves a senior delphi developer who is the final point of call for all the difficult stuff no one else except maybe the technical director who built the software is capable of doing.

This fucking guy...I honestly hate dealing with him. His favourite game to play is not answering questions directly but instead playing some kind of crystal maze mystery bullshit with your queries. His next favourite game to play is simply not responding to queries at all, sometimes for days at a time. His final favourite trick is to do a bunch of work and not tell anyone on the team or update the client, leaving us all sort of scrambling to figure out what the hell he's done. Oh wait there's one more. He likes to invent new processes that apply only to himself and nobody else. One week it will be "I only wish to be contacted by email", next week it will be "create an official job request and put it through the software owner". Of course don't actually expect him to follow any of these processes, the whole point is he wants to make it more difficult to bother him with anything, like work.

Of course in any other capacity he'd be fucking gone by now but because he's the apparently the only person in Scotland capable of doing these particular tasks he gets free reign to cause all kinds of chaos.

Had a family friend who had - almost by accident - written some software which later became the industry standard for finding gold veins underground. So he was employed as a consultant for some giant mining company and his going rate was $1k an hour for whatever kind of work he was doing.

Guy barely worked 15 hours a week and was just sorted for life.

become an expert in whatever POS system some extremely large company uses, but not large enough to have developed in-house. you will become the one person the entire company revolves around.
