... what you want to do for a career?

I got accepted to UTSA and Texas Southern University. I remember filling out some kind of career aptitude test with my mom standing over my shoulder watching.

"Would you like to provide first aid to someone who is injured?"
*Chooses no*
Mom: That's mean! Change that to yes! They'll think you're a mean person!
Me: Mom, this is a career aptitude test not a personality survey
Mom: Change it to yes NOW!
Me: *sigh*

absolutely, i was strongly urged by my parents to go to a specific school because of the name/rep, and then to pick a marketable major (I ended up majoring in IT).

then i graduated and realized i had very little interest in enterprise IT in the traditional sense, and fucked up when i tried going down that route. now im kind of slowly getting back into IT but it's a very different route than I had expected.

i think my problem is that at 18 i had absolutely no fucking clue how the business world operates and so to pick a major/career before i even know what a career really is is kind of a silly concept. there is so much that i know now about the working world that i wish i could have told myself as a college kid, but would i have even been able to comprehend it at 18 or 19?

Yeah, I decided to major in computer science, but I had no idea I'd have to take "pre-requisite" courses before taking anything that had to do with computers.

So my Freshman year I took:
1) Psychology
2) Anthropology
3) World Geography
4) Chemistry
5) Some English writing class

Tuition: 13k

And UTSA wanted to raise tuition the next year. I didn't give a crap about any of the classes that I was taking at all.

Yeah basically

fucked around all of middle / high school so my grades were average as fuck and I had 0 goals or motivations.

Just before graduaion my parents were like "here are your options: A) go to college and we'll help you pay B) join the military C) your dad helps you get a job in the factory he works at"

I said fuck options B and C so I just went to college to figure shit out.

I filled out my paperwork myself. My mom just insisted on looking over my shoulder.

I did well in high school and got an amazing college/scholarship, but I still didn't know what I wanted to do. Luckily, I don't regret the choice I made in the end. I'm glad I didn't do neuroscience like I was originally considering.

I honestly don't know anyone that had a plan going into college follow through with it. Like, sure there are the kids who want to be a doctor and do "pre-med", but personally I didn't see anyone complete that.

I sure as fuck didn't know what I wanted to do or study when I was 18.

no. infact my mom was very very strict about knowing what i wanted to do before going. my mom also did what her parents wanted and she ended up going and basically wasted years of her life for no real reason. back then though you didnt need a degree in anything to get your foot in the door to a job.
