I would just find ways to motivate myself to work harder and faster and get it done on time to begin with

my only motivation was when i got up on d-day (deadline day) in the early hours of 6PM and realized I had until 11:55PM that day to start and finish the assignment
if (god forbid) i had class that day, i would do it in class

I used to consistently hand my assignments in a few days late. The penalty for late assignments was small so I would achieve an A or A+ grade which would be lowered to an A- or B+. Still a decent grade overall.

the late penalty at my uni was 5% total per day. and the pass mark was 50% so anyone who submitted it 10 days late had an auto-fail, and you'd need the equivalent of a 100% grade in order to just reach 55% on the 9th day

Not the same thing and over 20 years ago now but one day I had to be dropped off at school at some ungodly hour like at 6am. I did not want to be there, I did not want to deal with first period math, I did not finish any of the work. So being one of the only people there I found a paper clip on the ground and shoved into the classroom door lock and then twisted it off. Then made sure I wasn't hanging around.
So come time when the fat teacher arrived, late of course. He couldn't open the door, had to call maintenance and we all got to sit outside that morning. They got it open eventually but not until later in the day.
