Just finished my second round of board exams and starting my senior year in med school. Now is the time we decide on a specialty and I'll be applying anesthesiology. AMA.

Playing the long-con, eh? I don't make an attending's income for 5 more years.

I lost someone to suicide who was in the middle of med school recently, I'm afraid, and I'm sure the stress didn't help

:( depression and suicide is practically an epidemic in the medical community right now. 400 students and residents kill themselves per year and a lot of it has to do with the prolonged rat race, the archaic hierarchy and general tolerance of treating students as less than human, the obvious stress of dealing with and being responsible for human life, and this general notion of doctors being super human and pushing their labor limits to the max.

It promotes a field whereby any admitting of needing help is a sign of weakness and can potentially impact one's career. It's getting better. Personally I haven't suffered any abuse from attendings during my clinical year--on the flip side they've all been super helpful and respectful.

I wanted to be an anesthesiologist for awhile since I wanted to get ppl high for a living and they used to be able to leave the O.R. during procedures but I believe that's not longer the case.

Well it's shifting to a 4:1 supervision model with CRNAs handling most of the bread and butter cases and an anesthesiologist peeks their head in each room and responds wherever a CRNA needs help. There's more emphasis on pre-op assessment, doing regional blocks, and covering services like acute pain or helping with difficult intubations in different departments. Anesthesiologists really have a unique skillset that goes way beyond just administering anesthesia during an operation.

You still sit in on your own cases occasionally though. If it's a quick bathroom break or grabbing a cup of coffee from the lounge during a non-critical part of a procedure, it's fine. Otherwise there is usually time in between cases for a short break unless you're working in a high volume surgi-center.

I much prefer it to clinic, because that's a non-stop stream of patient after patient, squeezing every encounter in 15-30 minute blocks. No real time for yourself.

This is a weird question. I mean that's kind of the point of anesthesia--you're not conscious, you don't feel anything, you don't remember anything. All things you want when you undergo surgery.

The practice of anesthesia has been made to be extremely safe. These days it's much more likely you suffer a complication from the surgeon's side of things. So in that regard, no, it's not likely to kill you. But that's because you have a doctor specifically trained in this who can anticipate all the bad things.

Good luck on her journey. I've worked with some great CRNAs.

Congrats on getting that far. My question is Did you always have the stomach for seeing guts and disgusting things or do you get desensatize after a while? The medical field interests me but I don't have stomach for some stuff that Nurses and Physicians have to deal with.

Personally, it's never bothered me and I've always found it interesting, tbh. I do have classmates who are a bit squeamish still at the sight of blood or needles. And you always hear the stories of students on their first surgery rotation who pass out. But largely I think most people do get desensitized to it.

The great thing is there is a really wide variety of specialties and practice settings. So long as you'd be able to stomach a semester of gross anatomy, a few month clerkships in surgery and OB, and a couple basic procedures in terms of starting IVs and such, after medical school/residency you could theoretically not get exposed to much, if at all. Especially most outpatient medicine.

Eventually, but I want a few years in the field first. Gives me enough time to get married and have a kid then fresh back to school.
