A while ago, my mom decided that she's never going to believe anything anyone says because everyone lies.

Fair enough.

I mean, every time I trust anything at all that anyone says she calls me naive, etc.

Ok, fine.

The problem is this.

Logically, if you don't believe anything anyone says, this means that when someone says something, all you know is that the person said that thing. Whether or not that thing is true, you have no idea.

That's logical, right?

But my mom is utterly incapable of understanding this.

For my mom, when she doesn't believe someone (which is almost all the time), she becomes convinced that the opposite of what the person has said is the absolute truth.

It's just completely nuts.

If you want my mom to believe something so strongly that nothing can change her mind, just tell her the opposite. She'll think you're lying, which means, obviously, that the exact opposite of what you're saying is true.

It's so frustrating.

She's just completely incapable of understanding that not believing someone doesn't mean that the opposite of everything they say is true! My god how complicated is this? >_>
