As it stands, the less populous rural states are disproportionately influential as compared to more populous states. Dividing California in to a smaller states or making Puerto Rico a proper state would increase the number of Democrat-favoring states that exist. For how doggedly presidential candidates currently pursue swing states, an increase in the number of states that favor a single party would be a game changer. Those who currently benefit from the status quo are incentivized come out against granting statehood to certain regions.

Historically speaking, the way this was handled was to just add more states to balance it out. Taking California for example, the way the current proposition to split it up is pretty gerrymandered in favor of the Democrats. There'd be several better ways to do it to balance things out (e.g. not include the Bay Area in North California)

Anyways, statehood for DC should be a goal for Democrats if and when they regain power. I'd say Puerto Rico too, but I know Puerto Ricans themselves are much more mixed on the prospect of statehood --- kin to all that throbs ... Copied to Clipboard!
