Why is Catelyn such a petty bitch? I get shes pissed at Ned for cheating, once, over a decade ago, but where does she get off treating Jon like straight shit when she gets the chance? Even when she meets other bastards who are more than great people she immediately turns her nose up at them and judges them based on their birth. Fuck her.

Everyone has flaws in GoT. G.R.R. Martin said he doesnt want to write a book about clearly good vs bad, rather books where [almost] every person has both good and bad qualities, and you end up being torn between their rights and wrongs...

She really can't help it. I think she sees it as a stain on her honor too. But she has admitted to feeling guilty about it.

It's said in the books both that "she might have overlooked a dozen bastards for Ned's sake", but he brought Jon home to Winterfell and called him his son for the entire country to know. And even though we know that Jon is really Lysa's son and not Ned's, that didn't stop the rumor that Ned loved another woman.

Also, in the books they say that Catelyn at one point heard a rumor that Jon's mother was Ashara Dayne (the sister of the knight who massacred Ned's guys at the Tower of Joy in S6). When she asks Ned if it's true, it's said that his reaction is so bad she actually feels afraid of him for the first and only time in their marriage.

So between those two things, yeah, she was a bitch about it, but perhaps you can understand it a little better. Plus bastards in Westeros have a (not entirely undeserved) reputation for faithlessness, and she was worried Jon would try to take Winterfell from Robb...which of course Jon never would have, because he loved his brother/cousin.

The nobility from places that aren't the North seem to be pretty arrogant across the board (barring Stannis, who is all about the duty that comes with his birth). The North's culture keeps the Starks pretty chill, but the other major families clearly have their personality issues. I mean, just look at Catelyn's sister.

I think the only other time she exhibits any sort of snobbery about bastards is her reaction to one minor character in the Eyrie, and I believe even that's more because it reminds her of Jon. She wasn't even a bitch to the bastard girl, she was just inwardly taken aback.

It's a shitty thing, but she genuinely just doesn't like Jon because it's proof that Ned cheated on her.
