Not mine personally, but the going rate for a new renter in my same apartment. It was $750 when I first moved here, and now it's $1,571 for a new renter.

When did you move in? Was the building heavily remodeled recently? Expensive part of the country where rental units are in high demand?

Around ten years ago, so yeah lol it's been a while. Still though.

Yeah, they've done remodeling.

I'm in a Houston suburb, but it's one of the expensive ones.

So yeah I get why there's such an increase but still it just blows my mind.

That makes sense, then. In 10 years, the property tax has definitely gone up in the area. Being that it's a Houston suburb, it's in high demand and a lot of businesses have been moving into Austin/Houston/Dallas.

Plus if they've remodeled a lot and made it much nicer, people will pay that rate because they get value out of it.

at least you have rent control. mine went up about $50 / month last time I renewed and they acted smug about it

yeah it could have been worse. it was more that the only other place I rented was more favorable to renters, so they didn't increase rent in the ~4 years I lived there, while this city is more landlord friendly
just a bit of a shock more than anything for me

Oh no, I don't have rent control, it's just mine has gone up slower than the new move in rate. So yeah every time I renew mine goes up about 20 to 30 bucks or so.

one of my favorite things was my first re-up form letter from my apartment. they spent like half a page apologizing for having to raise my rent, please don't hate us, etc. then a line so they could write in the new rate. My first increase was literally $5. (1.33%).

they raised my rent a month ago. trying for another place (they raised it on account of a new landlord). by about 250$. and to add i could get any place i want right now but that is made harder by the fact i have a pit/plott mix. there's not many dog friendly places around here.

went from 740$ to 1k dollars.

Lol

it's the stuff of dreams never having to move. for 2 reasons. you prefer them not to drastically raise rent and it's a pain in the ass to move furniture.

but at least a lot of that money goes to the principal over those 10 years, which means you aren't throwing as much money away. with equity + appreciation you can increase your net worth quite a bit.

10 years ago house prices were slammed by the great recession, broseph. and right now most markets are hot. should've definitely gained some appreciation in the last 10 years.

I feel like property management people across the nation just got together and decided to charge unplayable prices. $1500/month is a good price for a two bathroom house where I live. Youre not going to find an apartment for a penny less than $1000/month
