The purple was just so Sam Jackson could see himself when watching the battle of Geonosis.

Well, it's the color the crystal emits, if that's what you're asking.

If you're asking from a narrative standpoint, eh, it fluctuates.

Prior to the prequels getting groundswell, books, comics, and games had a rainbow of colors for lightsabers.

Once the prequels gained traction, it was pretty much blue and green for good guys, red for bad guys, but some works would insist on odd colors. Sam Jackson got his purple saber because he goddamn asked for it.

These days, there aren't enough lightsabers in the sequel trilogy (or anything that came out in the EU) to establish whether there's differences in color.

The only person to buck the trend is Ahsoka Tano in Rebels. Hers are silver-colored.

Actually, now that I think about it, I think there are some sabers in comics I haven't remembered.

There's a black one, right? Or is that not considered a lightsaber?

Ah, you're right. I forgot about the Darksaber.

Yes, despite the apparent goofiness of the concept, the Darksaber is a lightsaber. It was made by the first Mandalorian to ever be inducted into the Jedi Order.

Actually, now that you mention it, the Darksaber (and the events around it) bring up a point that a lot of people wrestled with in the past: what does it feel like to wield a lightsaber? Is the beam weightless? The episode in question basically suggested that an activated lightsaber's beam kind of "pulls" at the user with its own force, making it difficult to effectively wield, compared to a solid stick or blade.

And it proves that, with proper training, anyone can wield a lightsaber. It's just ultimately easier for Force-sensitives because of their self-control of their bodies.

didn't this explain (and alter) the rules? the crystals bond to the owner and the color matches their personality I only got it second hand, so I really hope I'm wrong.

Blue/Green = Good
Red = Bad
Purple exclusive to SLJ

Anything else doesn't matter so its just in comics and games.

I heard that too but because it's dumb as fuck, I reject it.

According to KotOR, this. That was about 1,000 years before the movies though, so they basically lost their meaning over time. Blue and green are just the most commonly available crystals, so jedi pick whichever one they want.

Purple doesn't really have a solid meaning. One theory is that it's for jedi with knowledge of both the dark side and the light side, but who keep them in balance (hence the mix between red and blue). Kind of fitting that Windu had one, since he was more than willing to kill Palpatine instead of letting him go to trial.

I thought it was dumb when I first heard it but the more I thought about it the more i'm ok with the crystal sorta resonating with the person's force 'signature'
it's not exactly a plus in my mind, but it's not a negative anymore

I don't think there's any canon explanation beyond "red is for the bad guys".
