it's been going downhill for a little while. first they stopped stocking the shelves, and now they've put up signs saying all sales are final. it just couldn't compete with the nicer (and much more expensive) store right around the corner

shame, i've gotten familiar with the employees there

who knows. poor management probably. sucks that the employees have to find new jobs, or maybe they got transferred. it's a union shop so I'm sure they'll have work somewhere

Yeah, I saw the same thing at my local Toys 'R Us. It' 's sad to see a store I loved in my childhood closing down, and I feel bad for the workers.

How could they lose to the more expensive one? Is the other one that much nicer?

There is no "would of", "should of" or "could of".
There is "would've", "should've" and "could've".

We have a little ole IGA that's been around for like 35 years and Walmart has been trying to put them under the last 20.

Been going there for 20 years myself.

Aside from the electronic stuff needed the store still looks like something from the late 1980s.

they recently built a walmart around what i call "a shopping area" it's the prime area to get various things etc. i have a feeling the fred meyer down the road will probably be put out of business if they lose too many customers. i guess i would feel bad because some of my childhood was spent at that fred meyer (bought my first genesis game from there).

Giant is the one that's surviving. There's also a Harris Teeter down the street, as well as a Safeway. Shoppers have been shuttering up everywhere, ESPECIALLY when a Walmart comes to town. They normally turn into international food marts.

I'm pretty much the same way. Grocery stores are trying to be trendy, hip world markets - I just want to buy food. Keep it clean, keep it cheap, and decorate however the hell you like.

Back home we had a Giant that closed down back in the mid 80s.

Was my childhood grocery store.

I remember my Grandma cashing in her green stamps every so often.

Problem was that it was located right in the middle of downtown where people started doing things other than shop for food and all the food stores on the outskirts took business by people who didn't want to deal with the downtown crowd.

U-Haul eventually took up residence there and kept the huge ass arch sign which was known as the tallest sign in the area.

I know of an IGA like that. Shopes is right down the road from a Wal-Mart and they stay in business by being cheaper and fresher than them. The owner is a nice dude to

Went on a shopping spree after work. Got a bunch of dry goods mostly - fresh stuff like bread and eggs either weren't on sale or were sold out. Everything was 30% off, so I spent about $40 and got ~$52 worth of groceries. Could have gotten a lot more, but I ran out of ideas of things to buy and wanted to go home. I'll stop by tomorrow and see what's left - they sell random non-grocery stuff too like household supplies and general stuff.

Talked to one of the clerks on the way out; he said they knew they were closing for a few months beforehand, which is good. Gives people enough time to find a new job. If their union is any good, they'd have been offered other jobs right off the bat lol
