If you're thinking of the note 8,and you can afford it, get a cheap phone and wait for the note 9 soon.

Just get a tracfone if you've got very few contacts and hardly use your phone.

I call it a "loner phone" because it's the most cost effective for loners. It certainly is not fast, though.

If you got a number of contacts, a basic smart phone with unlimited usage.

If you got a billion contacts you need to keep in touch with often....why can't you still just use a basic smartphone with unlimited usage?

Ignore fanboys, for starters. When people tell you that one phone is unequivocally the best no contest they're really just speaking from their own subjective opinion. You can lay out all the hardware specs in the world but there's no accounting for taste, and really the feeling you get from holding it and using the OS is the most important thing. Each of the top phones do certain things better, ultimately it will come down to what you like.

Go into a phone shop, play around with the devices you like the sound of, and a few others. CE told me to get a Pixel X2 but I honestly loved the Samsung S8+. People told me it would be too big and get the S8 (not the S8+), I didn't agree. People said I should get the S9 but I felt it was a huge increase in price for not a whole lot more performance. They said that Samsungs were overpriced crap and I should get a Hauwei, but I hated that phone. They said all of the flagship models are a scam and I should get a Sony Xperia, but I nearly barfed when I saw it.

You see, all of this is just my opinion and no tech nerd could convince me otherwise. I picked the one that I really fucking wanted, not because someone on CE told me the CPU was superior by 7.2%.

So, once you've decided on what you like the look/feel of, then look into buying a refurbished model outright. I wouldn't go on a contract. You'll end up paying out the ass for the next 2 years for a phone that's depreciating in value. I saved around $1k buy buying a refurb outright, and it's honestly perfect aside from one minor scratch on the back...which is covered by the phone case anyway.

I recently came across an old coworker. She's literally broke 7 phones this year alone.

Older phones would've never broke that easy, nor did they ever cost $500+

Today the phone market is a steaming load of horseshit.

i mean, old phones were plastic crap that did almost nothing at all. modern smartphones are an all-glass miracle of engineering and science and of course are more fragile.

I've had my S8+ for maybe 2 months now and I still have this "holy shit, it can do that?" moments regularly.

Also on the topic of "more fragile", the screen is nigh unscratchable and it's completely water resistant to 1.5metres for 30 minutes. Old phones can't do that.
