Didn't we already go through this when that NBA announcer said that Russell Westbrook was out of his cotton pickin' mind?

Yes and when he was fired people said it was an overreaction because it was a "common phrase".

It's an incredibly common phrase in southern and midwest states. Nobody considers it even remotely racial here.

It's a reference to the fact that cotton had to be picked by hand even during the industrial era. It was considered a particularly difficult crop to harvest.

most people don't think about it as a racial term. I never did until this debate started. hell, in an old 60's issue of spiderman, he says it even. I've never considered it to have anything to do with race and always attached it to anyone, of any race, or any situation in which it applied.

seems like half the people who use that phrase anymore don't bother to think about the origins of it and just say it because they've heard it from old media

like one of my white friends used to casually say it cause she heard it in old Bugs Bunny cartoons as a kid
she never stopped to think what the possible context was between cotton picking and thought
i mean she stopped, but not until somebody told her "uh yeah gurl what youre sayin has racist context, just so you know..."

Im going to voice an angry opinion about something that is never going to resonate with me. How dare those black people get upset about something that calls back to a long history of racial violence, persecution, and slavery.

it doesnt much matter what your personal feelings are on it when there are millions of people for whom a horrific time is brought up.

this is the same argument that people try to use to okay minstrelsy. its not a good one. stop it.

I don't really care if "millions" of people want to misinterpret a commonly used phrase because they want to get offended tbh. The phrase "out of your cotton pickin' mind" has nothing to do with slavery sooo

At best it's insensitive and at worst it's racist. I don't think most white people take the second to stop and think about the origin of the phrase and decide that it's still ok to say, they just don't consider it important.

Did I not just watch a clip where a black man took particular offense to that phrase? Am I taking crazy pills?

Let's not act like this dude who was born and raised in New England didn't specifically use that phrase. You even see him think about it before throwing it out. Especially after the line about dog whistles? You can't tell me that wasn't a calculated move.

https://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/cotton-picking.html

Literally not racist. This is what happens in 2018 where everyone immediately pulls out the race card and race bait and feel the need to white knight everything: they forget to think critically and they sure as Hell dont do any research on what they are white knighting. It ends up, in this case, making a person look foolish by getting upset over nothing
