japanese people tend to have narrower faces and bigger, rounder eye shapes
they also have sharper noses and jaws

chinese people tend to have rounder faces and narrower eyes
with soft noses and jaws

If we are talking about people who are from those countries and not 3rd generation immigrants, fashion. Koreans, Japanese, and Chinese often wear different clothes and have different haircuts. I'd say that Koreans dress the fanciest and Chinese dress the simplest. That's not a jab against Chinese people, I dress simply myself (I'm white).

And of course you could listen to them speak in their native language. They sound very different.

I would question why you would need to. If family comes up, fine but it's not really anyone's business.

Really I don't even assume after a hear someone speak a specific east Asian language. Recent immigrants often speak three or more languages. And again, it's none of my business.

I mean there's probably ways to have a good impression, but it's not 100%.

For example, when I see a guy sometimes I can sort of tell that he looks kind of eastern european / slavic rather than french or italian for example. But not everyone fits.

I knew a Japanese guy in Montreal and he said that sometimes when he went to china town some shopkeepers would speak to him in Chinese and he'd have to tell them in english that he didn't understand. To be fair though there are very, very few japanese in Montreal so you probably can't blame them for mistaking him for chinese
