But in all seriousness, isn't this kind of bad timing for this type of thing?

No its perfect, the GOP is worried all these immigrants they are torturing will apply for medicaid.

@Darkman124

was i also arguing in bad faith in the recent topic about renewables where you realized you were wildly incorrect? no.

sometimes smart people are so wildly incorrect that you have to be stalwart in telling them so. this is another example of you being wildly incorrect. raising taxes a lot isnt going to fix anything, it'll just make everything worse.

raising taxes to pump ever more money into the system sure as hell wont take care of fraud and waste

if the government cant learn to get by with less, we need to start electing a new government

In some situations, it would reduce fraud. Fraud caused be people receiving benefits that they shouldn't have would be largely eliminated if everyone received the benefit. You can also reduce waste that way since you'd need significantly less resources to determine if people are supposed to get something or not.

For government waste in general, you have the problem that the government is overly regulated by other parts of itself, you get severe executive changes every few years so there's no real long term plan and there's little incentive to do your job well. All of that could be changed, but no one really wants to.

Agreed. The solution isn't "raise taxes a lot and seize 401k funds" though.

Yeah. If the system is flawed, you can't fix it by changing its funding. Throwing more/less money at something is the easiest thing legislators can do though, so it ends up being the "solution".

Cut medical funding, but increase military spending...

That's the Republicans for you.

at some point we will need to, since it's unlikely we'll institute common sense changes before we wind up in a financial crisis

You can't. 401K funds are private.

Unless you just start taxing them 100%

a lot of things that are private have been taken by governments that embraced authoritarian policy to resolve crises over the course of history. i assume nothing.

i favor policies that push us away from that trajectory in general

well put. indeed, the fraud problem likely will persist until we shift to a single payer system.

Ridiculous. A lot of people depend on that stuff. Im all for you need to get better paying jobs, work harder, etc, but I am not for this.

Figure it out another way. Health insurance is fucking disgusting in this country.

I am not one that likes Obama, but I at least applaud is failed attempt to try and fix a fucked up system. But it wouldnt matter who attempted to fix it, it was doomed to fail. We need consecutive presidents to try and fix the system.

Let me rephrase that.

If you try to do it the whole country will riot.

I'm not sure pissing off your voters directly and within a few months of a crucial midterm election is a good idea, but if anything this is simply more evidence of the GOP leadership realizing the real chance they are about to lose the House and need to ram through their entire agenda within the next 5 months.

Though Ryan may as well try, he's leaving anyway and is desperate to get something done for his legacy with entitlement reform anyway

i agree, which is why if you go back and re-read the context of that coming up, i noted it'd be in circumstances where if you don't try to do it, the whole country will riot.

Which will likely never happen, because America's political pendulum always swings the other way every 4-8 years.
