Fun fact: The pterodactyl cage scene from Jurassic Park 3 was actually in the first novel. Grant is on a raft down river or something and happens to drift into it.

They also blow up a volcano at the end of the book. It's fucking badass. The movie is great, but the book is like 10x better imo >_>

I wonder if the movie would have been nearly as successful if Spielberg had stuck closer to the novel

It certainly would not nearly have been as "family friendly" that's for sure, especially given 90s sensibilities

Donald Gennaro in the book: Generally decent guy who helps out when things go bad and survives the island.

Donald Gennaro in the movie: Cowardly, stereotypical lawyer who gets eaten by the tyrannosaur.

Also in the book, Ian Malcolm and John Hammond die at the end and Gennaro lives, but when he wrote the Lost World novel, Malcolm magically comes back to life for some bizarre bullshit reason and Gennaro dies of dysentery on some random business trip >_> like wtf

moar liek Crichton saw how well received Malcolm was in the movie and the fact that Spielberg let him live and was like "UHHHHHHHHHH, he needs to come back so I can make money lol" and bullshitted him into the sequel book.

I remember not liking the Lost World novel as well, but there's some neat changes in it. Like there's a cool scene where someone is on a motorcycle shooting raptors with a rifle to get a key off one of them. I don't think that was in the movie. And Kelly was actually white in the book and had a black friend named Artis(?) that tagged along with her. In the movie, they just kinda combined those 2 characters to make her a black chick >_>

I read the book before I saw the movie, so it really stood out to me how much they changed his character. He's s major viewpoint character in the book, and in the movie he's a one dimensional joke.

Robert Muldoon in the book: badass drunk game warden who tranquilizes T-Rexes and blows up raptors with rocket launchers and survives til the end.

Robert Muldoon in the movie: Somewhat badass game warden who stupidly underestimates raptors and gets killed when earlier he was going on about how smart and dangerous the raptors were and how they shouldn't be underestimated.

I still like the movie more, but looking back they screwed him. I also prefer naive good Hammond than greedy jerk Hammond.

Probably not, I'm about 5 hours into the audiobook and it's been really dry af so far. A lot of the characters are better, but the kids certainly aren't. And we really don't need to spend a chapter learning that the compys are the ones eating all the dino poop on the island lapras.

I do remember the beginning being really slow. I think the first 50 pages are just about some random South American country having compys eat babies or something. It's a little odd >_>
