I think I'm getting kind of close to the end of the game (up to Tyr's Vault, after you heal the kid and all that crap) so I figured I'd go on CE and whine.

It's definitely a good game and very, very well-made, but I've found that I'm not really gripped the way I usually am with a good game. I respect the work that went into this game and anyone who says it's not good is just trolling, but I feel like it's an experience I could ultimately take or leave.

Observations:

- I just can't get into the plot/setting. I like the Norse mythology idea but the world doesn't feel real or lived-in, especially since you see like 5 characters the entire game, and there's not even a hint that anyone else lives in the world, no towns or whatever.

- I also find it really hard to give a shit about Kratos' kid and Kratos' relationship with him, since it's kind of cliche at this point and feels tacked on. I know there's a twist with the kid at the end but I doubt it will really change things for me.

- RPG elements feel really tacked on and add nothing to the game and honestly all the crafting and upgrading gear and shit like that just feels like time wasters to me.

- bosses are a big weak point. seems to mostly be variations of the big "troll" type that you strafe around. the dragon fight was awful and did not work well with the game mechanics at all

- camera angle is cool for walking around but is a pain in the ass during combat. i know there are projectile indicators and all that but it feels like a band aid over a pretty preventable issue

- climbing feels pointless since you can't fight while doing it like in the old GoW games, and it's on rails and has no actual gameplay, you're just moving the joystick forward.

pretty much everything else in the game is great though. combat especially is so good that i wish GoW was more of a straight up brawler.

Your only complaint that bothered me was the repeated trolls and no real epic bosses like earlier games. Still loved the game tho.

yea that fight was awesome. very cinematic, multiple phases, etc. was kind of hoping there'd be more of them but instead it was mostly trolls lol

I liked the game, but it wasn't the best game in the series IMO. Starts off VERRRRRY slow and slowly picks up from there.

Pretty much this. I did not expect a God of War game to be this good and have actual emotional impact but it does. Early and strong candidate for GoTY.

I really liked it but I felt like it was held back with the enemies becoming damage sponges.

Maybe I should have played it on easy lol. It wasn't hard it just got annoying

Overall story was just okay but that's a huge step for God of War, bosses were lame compared to those armored enemies imo but overall I loved the combat

The constant reuse of assets bothered me a lot more than in previous games for some reason.

I also thought the combat was less fun since most enemies where damage sponges.

the reuse of assets stood out to me too but it didnt bug me that much.

also i am playing on the normal difficulty so most enemies arent really damage sponges, not a big deal imo.

Imo Round 2 was better.

Kinda curious how they're gonna handle Ragnarok in the second one (especially since they're kinda changing things to fit their story narrative).

The gameplay and the story were top notch but I definitely feel like they were holding back with this being the first entry in a potential new trilogy. Especially after going all out in god of war 3.

No doubt the next one will get back to the crazy af Norm were used to. They did just start Ragnarok

Like, I never thought that getting the Blades of Chaos would be a moment of dread but they did it and truly made it feel like like the last resort of a desperate father.

honestly i felt the complete opposite way about that moment, i thought the reasoning for getting them was such a weak plot device.

hey, it's too COLD in hellheim so we need a weapon that is HOT!

It was partly because of the temperature, but it worked because of the reason he did not want to touch it ever again. That's why it was a highlight.

If you're not attached to the story or setting then you're missing out on the biggest part why people like the game. So that's why you view it lesser than most.

Of your complaints, along with everyone else, I agree with the lack of boss fights and diversity of boss fights. Kind of sucks considering that was a big thing God of War was known for.

They made the biggest weakness of the originals, that Kratos was extremely one note, and made it the biggest strength of this one, that he absolutely does not want to be that ever again.

Kratos being an awkward Dad because he's bad with emotion is the greatest thing. It's so damn cute.
