What even is so hard about KH? Some of the lore is a bit complicated, but the main plot is simple as fuck.

You want a convoluted game? As much as I love it, Xenogears is a mess.

You can generalize any plot to be simple.

"Evil guy doing evil things."

But if your ability to present a story is shit, all aspects of it are going to be misunderstood and frowned upon.

Even if KH just boils down to good vs evil, it's infested by so many unnecessary, incomplete elements that lead into a jumbled mess.

I also love the stories in MGS and Soulsborne. That just goes to show I prefer non-linear stories instead of the ones that hold the player's hand.

MGS' stories are permanetly incomplete/fragmented, and the souls games almost don't have a story, but have fantastic lore.

There's nothing wrong about a story that makes you think, but there seems to be a decent amount of people who can't write coherent stories in game development. This isn't even an East vs West thing, which is surprising.

People forget that KH has a story that has focused on the same plot for 15 years. Not many games have that, so of course people will say it's convoluted or confusing just for that reason alone.

By the time the credits rolled at the end of FF13 I had absolutely no idea what happened. All I knew was that it was awful and cringe worthy. Same with Ninja Gaiden on Xbox.

Xenogears, Xenosaga, MGS, and Soulsbourne are up there, but they are actually interesting.

Not an in-game storyline, but Nintendo's reverse engineered Zelda timeline is LOL worthy. "So this branch is if you lose in this game, but if you won then these games happened..."

I don't know why but I love me an extremely convoluted story, maybe this is why I love games like Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Cross, Drakengard/NieR so much

Chances are if it's needlessly convoluted, has time travel and it basically requires me to read from different sources to even begin to understand it, I'll love it.

Convoluted doesn't have to mean it's hard to understand.

MGS has most of the elements there but it's just too complicated for it's own good. Hence why MGS4 nanomachine'd everything.

Legacy of Kain is like

You start out and you're this regular dude in a bar and then some people come into kill you because what the fuck and you die and while you're in hell a necromancer turns you into a vampire and sends you back. Then there's these corrupted pillars that are causing the world to get destroyed that need to all be restored to save the world, each one corresponds to a dude that you need to kill, and you kill them all and finally realize that the last one is representing you, and you need to kill yourself, but you're like LMAO FUCK THAT. So the world starts dying. Along the way you make new vampires and start evolving but one of them evolves faster than you so you get really mad and throw him into a watery abyss which is apparently instant death.

Then like 2000 years pass and the dude you threw at the bottom of the abyss is resurrected by a hentai tentacle monster and says "I'm bored and decided to rez you so you can go get revenge cause I'm such a nice guy and definitely don't have any ulterior motives." So then you kill ghosts (again) and eat their souls to go back up to beat the fuck out of the vampire from the first game but he's got this uber sword that fucking ends people in one hit. You lose the fight again but when he tries to hit you with the uber sword the sword explodes and leaves a sword ghost that becomes permanently attached to your arm and you use it to eat the souls of all your vampire bros who weren't thrown into the abyss by your asshole vampire dad. Then you're all powered up to go kill your asshole vampire dad but he activates a time machine and goes back in time to before the world was destroyed.

You follow him back in time and discover that you were actually part of the group of vampire hunters that killed your vampire dad and he turned you into a vampire for lulz and wiped your memory and then you also figure out that vampires are actually angels and you find the first angel named Janos Audrin who had his heart ripped out by the vampire hunters and there's this wizard guy with time traveling magic who worships the hentai tentacle monster and is trying to help you but you're pretty sure he's a piece of shit. Then literal demons attack out of nowhere.

THEN you take a step back and you go back to playing asshole vampire dad who figures out that demons are trying to invade and that those pillars that needed to be restored were actually keys that locked the demons out of the world and by refusing to sacrifice himself to restore the pillar thus destroying the world he actually saved it and then Janos Audrin gets kidnapped and sucked into the demon realm and we don't know how he got back out to get his heart ripped out by the vampire hunters later.

Then you're back in the present time and that sword that broke open on your face from the second game is back and you're playing both asshole vampire dad and dead vampire son and you kill a bunch of people and asshole vampire son steals the heart of Janos back to put it back into his chest and resurrect him and he gets possessed by demons and vampire dad is like "you fucking moron" and then that time travelling wizard guy gets stabbed by vampire dad, dies, goes to ghost world with hentai monster and gets stabbed again and eaten by hentai monster. and then dad and son fight and then asshole vampire son realizes that he's eaten so many souls that if the vampire dad's sword can eat his soul it'll become the most uber weapon in the world and then vampire dad is like "what? No I'm not gonna do that" so vampire son just jumps onto the sword instead and dies and then vampire dad cuts off all the hentai monster's tentacles and he retreats back to the demon realm and we don't know what happened to Janos Audrin and then it just ends.

Correct, MGS is the main reason I said "Not many". There are differences though. Most of the KH games take place within a 2-3 year period, minus the prequel and mobile game, and has always focused on Xehanort in some way. MGS is all over the place between the 1960s and 2014, and doesn't always focus on the same conflict or characters.

Well yeah, that's why I worded it the way I did. It is convoluted, but it's only confusing if you don't start from the beginning. If someone starts reading a book starting halfway through, they're gonna be confused. I've played the games in release order and there's little I'm confused about at this point.

What's weird is Ocarina of Time is the only game to have that "you lose" path. Seems arbitrary that it isn't the case for other games. If it's the case of time travel, why doesn't Oracle of Ages have an alternative path if you lose...
Other than they just couldn't make a timeline without just that one scenario of course.

XIII trilogy jumped the shark by a ton

First game dealt with the war between Fal'Cie and L'Cie..both were poorly handled groups with hardly any explanation as to why the L'Cie were worth being purged

Lightning was a soldier? But we never saw her job nor anything related to it other than her being on the run for majority of the game. Somewhat complicated but nothing out of the "norm"

Then the next two games deals with:

1. Supposed Gods and Goddess being actual beings which is never a good idea
2. the cast went from being mortals to being thousands of years old..the fuck?
3. Lightning being the "savior of Etro" and herself being thousands of years old
4. Time Travel in general

Its like having Kickass go from being a realistic grounded movie to introducing shonen powers and aliens

I gave up on the story after CS1 and then wondered why I even cared to begin with. That shit was ridiculous.
