Horrific.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/17/us/immigration-deported-parents.html

"Anthony was sent to a shelter for migrant children. And she was put on a plane back to Guatemala."

From our work on the border, we have seen a significant increase in the number of moms separated from their children, and many of them have reported they didnt even have a chance to say goodbye before the separation"

"Poor coordination among them has made it hard to track children and parents once their paths diverge in the labyrinthine system."

"In some cases, parents and children have gone weeks without being able to communicate with one another and without knowing one anothers whereabouts."

"Children whose parents have been arrested are transferred to the custody of the Health and Human Services Department, whose staff screens them, finds housing and remains responsible for them.

From that point, migrant parents and children become separate legal cases in the maze of government bureaucracy, and keeping them linked has proved challenging. Different legal protections are afforded to juveniles and adults in the immigration system, and as a result, reuniting families can take months or longer, several legal experts said."

""In federal court, parents typically plead guilty to the misdemeanor offense of illegal entry. Many are then likely to accept expedited removal from the country, in the hope of being reunited quickly with their children. But children cannot be subject to expedited removal; they are automatically entitled to a full hearing before an immigration judge, and their cases take longer to resolve.

Once the parent and child are apart, they are on separate legal tracks, said John Sandweg, who was acting director of ICE during the Obama administration."

the process for US asylum literally begins at the border. if they approached an embassy or otherwise requested legal entry into the country beforehand, they would be handled under the refugee process which is different

in other words, the only way to initiate the asylum process is to waltz up to the border and ask for asylum. under current policy you're then held in custody until a decision is reached

I don't like Trump either, but I still believe we need strong immigration policies for our own security. We only have so many people we can accommodate. People who enter illegally are just making things harder for everyone.

That isn't what this lady did though...

Theyd had a plan: Elsa Johana Ortiz Enriquez packed up what little she had in Guatemala and traveled across Mexico with her 8-year-old son, Anthony. In a group, they rafted across the Rio Grande into Texas. From there they intended to join her boyfriend, Edgar, who had found a construction job in the United States.

She rafted across the Rio Grande and made a run for her boyfriend. :v The lady had to know what she was doing was wrong.

Again, from your article. Obama focused on criminals, not families. Stop being a disingenuous Trump apologist.

Who is not being deported?
With the focus on criminals and not families, the administration has moved away from those living and working in the U.S. without a criminal history.

"Felons, not families. Criminals, not children. Gang members, not a mom whos working hard to provide for her kids. Well prioritize, just like law enforcement does every day," Obama said in November 2014 when announcing his executive action on immigration.

And while he tried to provide relief and a way "out of the shadows" for those without criminal histories with his immigration action, that was eventually stricken down by the Supreme Court not issuing a decision on the case, thereby upholding the lower courts action.

But by refocusing on criminals most families who are living and following the law are not targets for deportations.

The law is the law though. Is it not accurate to say the leader who picks and chooses to whom it applies is more of a dictator than the one who applies it fairly and uniformly?

Also by definition, someone illegally crossing a border is by definition a criminal. Derp.
