24 year old kid I work with has been constantly calling another coworkers new mustang "gay" and says nobody thinks muscle cars are cool anymore and it's all about compact hatchbacks.

am I that out of touch or is this kid just an idiot?

Personally, I think it depends on how old you are. 17-20 year old kid who is obviously driving an expensive car bought with their daddy's money? Lame af. 22-34 year old who might have actually worked their ass off for something nice? Less lame, possibly admirable if they aren't a shite person. 45-55+ who obviously bought the car to try and feel young again? Utterly contemptible.

So year, odds are pretty good I'd view someone with a muscle car negatively

EDIT: All that goes out the window if I know the person worked to restore an older model. I find that shit admirable at any age. Wish more people fixed up old cars to make them quality again instead of buying new ones

Some do. I don't see the appeal in them at all. If you want performance or something that looks nice there are better options for the money than those cars.

I'm talking about the newer cars

If someone wants to restore old muscle cars that's their hobby but it's best if they're not used as regular drivers

I'll take my Impreza hatch over a muscle car any day.

Sure, it's not as flashy and definitely not as fast but I put a ton of work into getting it to perform as well as it does. You can just buy a stock mustang or camaro and it'll perform decently, and even more if it's an SS, GT, or something.

The only time I'll make fun of someone for buying a muscle car is if it's an auto. Yuck. At that point they're about as much fun to drive as a minivan because they don't handle nearly as well as something like a stock RX8 or Miata.

And then I look at the kid and I'm like "You drive a fucking Focus." and he gets all butthurt.

Idk I'm probably buying used luxury brands for the rest of my life. I've become an insufferable BMW fan and won't part with mine until I can buy another comparable nice used car.

My ex had a Mazda speed 3 that could smoke most vehicles. It was a smallish hatchback. Good car.

No, because its a fair assessment. I drive a shit 2006 Chevy Cavalier. The fun part? Paid cash up front for it so it's MINE. Literally all I care about. When it started having engine trouble last year I fixed it myself with some help from Google and YT, and I know fuck all about cars. Good times.

My coworker is selling all his stuff because he got a Mustang, and he can barely afford to pay his car payment. And for what? All that power to be regulated by a speed limit?

Just get your a luxury car, drive in style, and you're not going to look tacky.

I can agree on both ends. I had a 2007 Benz that was a PoS and it wasn't the best looking car.

Still Luxury>>>power unless you getting into the high end supercars.

Handling is better than power too. My old rx8 was a blast to drive even though it didn't have much oomph compared to a mustang or camaro. Zipping down winding roads while gunning it and knowing you'll hug the ground no matter what is the best feeling; can't get that in a musle car.

Uh Mustangs /Camaros/ Challengers are good bang for your buck vehicles if you want performance at a reasonable price. Sure you could modify your Subaru, but good luck trying to sell it for a reasonable price. Most used car buyers don't want to deal with someone elses project that might have been half assed.

Luxury cars are just really for the badge. You are paying a premium for that. Not exactly the most cost efficient both on initial cost and maintenance.

Also if you buy a performance hatch that costs a lot you are going to have non car people laugh and think you are an idiot for spending that much for a mere econobox. Also performance hatchbacks like the Focus RS are overpriced in my area. You can get a Mustang GT or a Camaro SS for the same amount.

Ricers aren't expensive. I got my Impreza for 1100, it's a 2004 and had 74k miles at time of purchase. Parts aren't that expensive and it's easy to do maintenance and repairs on them at home. I was even able to do a lot of work on it in my apartment building's parking lot...All it took was asking the leasing manager for permission and to borrow a jack from a neighbor.

I probably spent 6-7k total and two years on the project, but it performs much better than any car that would cost 11-15k at a dealership. Seven thousand dollars is definitely lower than average for a commuter imo. It would've been fine at 2000 dollars since it didn't need too much work after purchase...fixing a few leaks here and there, new tires/brakes, etc. I just wanted to go fast and look nice without having shit gas mileage.

Cars aren't expensive if you look around and are willing to put the work into them yourself.

Imagine buying gas once every 3 weeks and having a vehicle that can drive cross country without breaking.

Muscle cars cant do that. Basically, the kid calling the muscle car lame is just more intelligent and responsible with his money and duty in reducing his carbon footprint.

There's no argument to be made why having a muscle car is more practical than having a modern day compact car.

Mustangs and camaros are nice

Challengers are not

Hatchbacks are nice for their price point

There are way better cars at a higher price point, I'd rather save up for an Audi R8 that's more than twice the price of a Mustang than buy a Mustang
