question: "what's your stance on the current situation regarding the inequality of aboriginals in Canada?"

me: "I do not know because i do not follow the current political landscape."

I should have elaborated but the question was so out of nowhere and irrelevant to the job

For questions you aren't familiar with the background, it's better to fall back on how you would approach on answering the question if asked again tomorrow. For example, you can say that you can look up papers, surveys, news, and decisions made regarding the situation, and then formulate your stance.

it's similar to questions about algorithms. If you don't know how to answer it, you should explain your approaches on how to solve it eventually, such as asking for help, reading specific materials, and such

"Do you have any questions for us?"
"What is your greatest weakness?"
"What drew you to this job?"

Those are always such crappy questions. Interviews are always such wastes of time to me. You know and they know that the answer to every question is "I'm looking for work because I need money and I saw you were hiring."

All interview questions because they're all bullshit.

It's all about you can prepare/lie the best. The amount of people with great genuine answers to those are probably like <5% of the population

It's always the stupid generic ones. "Tell me a situation you faced at the workplace, and what did you do to solve it" and such. I really should prepare myself for those beforehand, since I'm usually a shit story-teller.

I had two interviews back to back the assistant manager just had a chit-chat with me and it was very open and friendly. Lots of socializing during the answering of basic questions.

The next interview: The actual manager comes in and semi-orders Take a seat.
He pulls his chair back, and its the sound of would kind of scraping on the floor. He sits and kind of looks directly at me unblinking and unemotionally...

...

Do people like you?

I guess so? People seem to be happy around me.

...

Why?

It felt less like a job interview and more like a reflection of myself. I had never stopped to think of people truly liked me or why they would enjoy my company. The reason he asked is because in that kind of job, its easier to train someone to do the job than it is to train someone to be likeable and theyre both equally important.

The authoritive tone and deadpan questioning just turns out to be his sense of humor/managing style... but it was extremely piercing questioning at the time.

The worst job interview question was when they indirectly insulted me.

I was interviewing for a residency position at a medical school that rejected me for medical school. I told them that I know people who currently attends there for medical school. They straight up asking me why I didn't attend their school even though my app was very competitive for the residency program.

In my head I was like "it is because you rejected me......."

It's not necessarily a wise move, but i try to sell myself on honesty and modesty. I hate being dishonest to sell myself, starting a relationship with a lie doesn't strike me as a smart thing to do.

So the questions where a certain answer is expected whether it's true or not, i struggle with. I know what i'm supposed to say, but i can't bring myself to say it.

IIRC, that's all mine was at Walmart too. I remember several minutes of dead silence on my part.

all the government job related interviews here are like 80%+ this. I don't know why. I once had a 1 hour interview that was just entirely this type of question and it was awful

"Why would you like to work for this company?"

What I would of liked to answer: "Well, Phil. I need money so I can contribute to society and actually have a decent pension when I retire. Plus it's walking distance from where I live."

How I actually answered: *Some bullshit about how I heard it was a good company to work for.*

Yeah, I work at a government job, and both of them were that. Nothing specific.

I think they focus more on the background checks.
