Eh the factory that my mom works at does this... Cept it isn't voluntary... When there are more people than work, people get fired until more people are needed again. Happens every single year. Newer employees more likely to get fired than old ones.

That isn't really anything special. I don't think most employers are inclined to pay for unnecessary workers during slow periods.

Not saying it was special, just saying Amazon seems to do it better if they say it is voluntary.

The tl;dr of the article seems to be "Amazon is evil for encouraging employees to go home early when there's nothing to do!"

My mom works at an Amazon fullfillment center. She doesn't like it very much. She's just bored of retirement.

They force them to go home, either directly or passive aggressively

They built a facility here in MN a few years back and I constantly interview people leaving their. Ever wonder why your package looks like it was hate fucked by the Hulk? They have a quota of packing 200-250 boxes per hour which is literally impossible. Those that come closest keep their jobs. Best part is during the summer, there's no A.C. in the warehouse. I cannot tell you how many people said they have or have seen someone pass out from heat stroke.

Fuck Amazon.

Even so, when the work's done, there's no useful purpose in having everyone just stand around or mop or something until the end of the shift.

Other jobs do that. Especially restaurants with waiters. Happens all the time there.

I'm not reading a long article where the hook is that they offer voluntary time off but if nobody takes it, they start sending people home. The point isn't to give people time off, the point is that they're overstaffed. Nothing wrong with offering it and nothing wrong with requiring it.

Well, yeah, that's how it works. You're over staffed for the day? Ask if anyone wants to go home early. If no one volunteers, you start mandating some people go home early. Usually the workers already in overtime or with the most hours on the clock.

Where the fuck ya'll work where it's acceptable to be forced to go home 20-30 minutes into your shift with no compensation for any of lost time, messing with clock in times, and active sabotage that punishes its own people who don't leave early willingly?

I don't think most employers offer those kinds of guaranteed payment.

I get 4 hours at my job. But part of the article goes into how they're supposed to get at least 2 hours pay if sent home but aren't getting that because of VTO which is "optional" despite being forced onto people
