Current Events > Which Dynasty Warriors game do I get? Zelda or Fire Emblem?

Never played Fire Emblem games much.

Played quite a few Zelda games.

Quality of the actual game is still more important to me though and I'm kinda interested in FE lore/art/story stuff lately.

For me, it would be the better character roster. Fire Emblem Warriors had so much potential, and so much to work with, but did nothing with what they had available.

From looking at the two games the Zelda one looks 'cooler' so to speak. I hear FE has some gameplay mechanics that are better but Zelda has a lot more variety of stuff in it and boss battles and such.

Yeah that's one thing that kinda bothers me about FE games, is the generic dialogue and story stuff.

And I've heard the criticisms of the character roster too, i.e. everyone is a dude/chick with a sword?

Fire Emblem has clone characters, yes, but people like to overblow it a lot. The plus side is that there are 0 'bad' characters. Everyone is fun or useful to play as. Whereas Hyrule Warriors has some truly awful/useless characters.

And no, there's like five different weapon types, including flying and mounted.

Fire Emblem is definitely superior from a raw gameplay perspective. You have actually effective allied units. The ability to force weak-point gauges. No movesets that are just outright terrible. And the skill and weapons systems allows you to seriously customize units so even units with the same movesets can play differently. The weapon triangle also adds a level of strategy to the game besides kill everyone. Oh and there are minimal giant bosses. There is also a whole bunch of smaller QoL improvements that are hard to explain if you haven't played HW, but are great.

Hyrule Warriors is however much better at fan-service. That game is a mass-murdering love-letter to the Zelda franchise. It also has more unique movesets, characters, and maps. But I'll say the maps are more tedious. Some of the characters/movesets are terrible, and combat is much slower as you often have to wait for enemies to expose their weak-points to do any real damage to them, which can often end with a lot of waiting.

A little over a third of the cast uses swords.

I'm sad that Ike isn't in the FE game...the game is fun though and I didn't expect to sit on a horse and whoop so much ass like that...it was unexpected but yeah, the game seems to be fawning over the newer games which hurts my soul.

Yeah, completely. I've been playing it quite a bit and there's so much about it that feels like the people who made it really love Zelda, and wanted to do the best job they could.

I would like to point out though that you CAN force weak points in HW, I do it all the time. As well as the fact that I've heard they brought over some of the QoL aspects over to HWDE.

Can you now? Like do you have to do a certain move? Like how in FEW it's C4 for melee units and C1 for Mages and Arches.

We've always been able to, even in the Wii U version. It's a bit more complicated than just combos but I do it all the time. Just go into Focus Spirit and then press the special attack button. Boom, weak point exposed. Killed some Ganons that way because I just didn't feel like waiting.

That's isn't anywhere close to the same and isn't overly-repeatable. Like in FEW, if I'm playing as Chrom, I just need to use the mini-Aether (the C4 combo) and it'll expose the weak point of any enemy that doesn't use a lance. No focus spirit or anything needed.

Besides, for the amount of content HWDE has, $60 is an amazing deal. It has hundreds of hours worth of content, easily. Let's see, I got it on release day, have played 155 hours, and I feel like I'm only 15%-20% through it at most.

There are no fairies in the Wii U version. If you are lucky, you might trigger Focus Spirit like twice during the battle.

You are right my use of the word "can't" is probably overstating it, but the method of triggering it is prohibitive enough that you are saving it for only the strongest enemies. That's still means you are spending a lot of time waiting on Lizardfos and stuff to expose their weak points, slowing down combat.

Depends if your willing to get the FE Warriors season pass. It makes the game more expensive but you get some more maps and the game has better characters and gameplay overall. Hyrule Warriors will have way more content either way though.

But on the other hand, in FEW against officers it jsut becomes a game of "use the exact same one move again and again" as opposed to saving the WPG chance for when you really need it...

Besides, I completely forgot about the focus spirit WPG ability until just now. I never use it.
