I know "cheating" isn't the right word, but in things like RPGs for example, I always try to keep myself healed up and kept alive via skills and magic, as opposed to reviving via life bottles and shit instead of resurrection spells.

Anyone else kinda like that?

Eh, not really? Even though I typically avoid using items myself, it's not because I think its cheating. It's more like "I don't want to waste this resource " especially since in most rpgs restoring your HP/MP is alot easier and comes up more often than getting items. Idk if that makes any sense lol

Items are sometimes less potent than healing spells, though.

I don't see how healing/reviving with magic or skills is A-OK, but items is a no-no for you.

There's literally no difference apart from the fact that the resource you expend in the former is MP/stamina, while in the latter it's your money.

I usually don't use items either, but it's more because of a 'hoarder' mentality like the second guy said.

In the end though, that's less you gotta do.

No. The games are often organized around them, at least early on. Often times, the best first order strategies for completing the main campaign are centered around finding strategies that mitigate their importance and make the party more self sufficient.

For a change, some challenge fights can make these items relevant again. The first example that comes to mind for me is Nyx in P3. Long fights put your resource conservation FOO strats to the test. Another that comes to mind for me is SO3, where strategically stun locking bosses can interrupt casts that might otherwise wipe the party. Also party members die all the time there, and resurrection items work faster than resurrection spells. Finally, there's special challenge modes like NG- in FF12TZA. Prior to that challenge I'd never even touched a Knot of Rust or used any of the elemental fangs.

Using the inventory items in DKC Tropical Freeze felt very cheap to me. I only used any a handful of times in my playthrough

Depends on the game. Something like Skyrim where you can freeze time in the middle of combat to dig into your pack, stuff 3 sweetrolls in your mouth, wash them down with a couple healing potions, and go from nearly dead to full health in an instant is kind of cheaty and I either self-impose a rule where I don't do it, or use a mod that makes it a heal over time.

But the typical turn based RPG you're spending your turn/action to use the item (and pay the material cost) vs doing an attack or other ability and thus its a fair trade off in my mind

Oh yeah, I absolutely hated that about Skyrim. You could not only completely pause mid-battle, but the items were instant heals without even so much as a recovery animation or heal-over-time to offset the benefit a little bit. It completely broke the flow, immersion and difficulty of combat.

Dark Souls is my idea of healing done right. You cant pause, and you have to consider the strategic timing of it or youre probably gonna get punished.
