just watched it for the first time on Netflix, great movie

but the ending has me confused. is it implied that mark wahlberg's character is a rat too, because he kills marky mark and you see the really obvious rat imagery at the end?

because at first i thought he might be doing a revenge killing for leo dicaprio & martin sheen's characters but then there would be no way he knew marky mark was a rat, because the police thought that there was only one information for Costello.

what are your thoughts

i had marky mark pinned as a guy who was about justice and was willing to go vigilante if he had to
is there any support whatsoever for marky mark being in on it? or just the simple rat drop at the ending?

- there's not really any way that the police would know that matt damn was a rat, since they were only looking for one and he was dead (the guy who shot leo)

- wahlberg's character was wearing protective clothing, shoe covers, had a ski mask, and a silencer on his pistol, showing that he intended to obviously kill matt damon, it wasnt like he went there to just collect facts and things escalated

- really obvious imagery of the rat running on the railing

I thought Wahlberg suspected Damon throughout the film, and decided to get vigilante justice. But it's been a while since I've seen it.

I never took it as Wahlberg also being a rat, but as him just avenging Leo and Martin Sheen. Plus he always knew Damon was a rat and hated him for it anyway. He is the only other living person at that point who knew about Leo being a cop and saw that since nothing was being done about Matt Damon being a rat that it was up to him.

That rat on the balcony was dumb though. It's something you'd see in some crappy amateur film and not one done by Martin Scorsese. I think it was just meant for Damon's character.

he never liked damon, he found damon suspicious and then too much shit popped off at the end for marky mark to not take action

It's really open to interpretation. It could mean he was a rat or it could mean he's getting justice the only way he knew how

I never took it to mean much, and I think Dignam was tying up loose ends. Costigan could have disclosed who he found out was the rat to Dignam in some fashion or he could have figured it out on his own since a lot of information about Costello came out during the movie, like being an FBI informant, and the rest of the characters were dead by the end of it all.

Costello sent the tape to the police psych who then sent it to Dignam. There is a lapse of time between when she hears the tape the first time, Costello's funeral and Dignam killing Matt Damon.
