"Bisexual" has traditionally been understood to mean "attraction to two or more genders."

Yeah, according to the rules of language, that's what it could mean (and I'm sure there are assholes who identify as bi and are specifically exclusionary of NB folk), but according to the nuances of context, that's not what it means :)

but its not unrelated. gender might be the most dominant aspect of the LGBTQ+ community, since those of us who identify in the first three letters have concerned ourselves explicitly with gender in some way or another. plus its a good way to promote community and intersectionality.

beyond that, historically people who have some sort of non traditional gender identity have been lumped in as gay or confused by most of cis/straight society in a similar way as most LGB people have, so thereve been connections naturally formed that way.
