She informs him that she's not real, but he doesn't care, this is better than nothing. Anyway, they go on shenanigans and people are confused when they see him basically just talking to and hanging out with himself. It's a light-hearted rom-com dealing with loneliness and mental issues. Over time, he realizes that his imaginary "girlfriend" is more of a really supportive best friend than a girlfriend and that's all he actually needed. Which is why she must leave in the end when he finds himself in a friend circle surrounded by people he likes being around and a girl who may or may not be willing to go to the movies with him. The imaginary girl's job is done.
