As it is it's probably about 50% too much grinding. If they took it down a notch I'd like it a lot more. Never completed it.

There's a 3DS version that more or less solves that problem, you know.

Oh in what way?

All normal encounters are on screen and avoidable, not random, and battles can be sped up.

You still need to grind? Or have they lowered the XP requirements for levelling up?

I really dug the slow, grindy pace of the game, personally. But yeah, there's no disputing that it's a grind on PS2.

stop sucking at rpgs.

ive played the game several times and there is absolutely 0 grinding required to get through the game. wouldn't take long to level up if you did decide to grind because metal slimes award absurd amounts of exp.

but yeah just because you can't mash attack throughout every battle doesn't mean you need to gain 5 levels before moving on. it means you should use some of your abilities.

Not to mention the 3DS version adds two new playable characters.

over the years, i've found that most people's problems with whether it's a grindy game or not comes down to how much exploring they did
I don't consider it grinding to go looking for a chest on the far side of the hill, but to some people it does. so when we say that it's not that grindy, they think it is

And the instant Alchemy Pot, Skill Tree info, etc. Presentation is the only thing the PS2 version has over 3DS.

It's an excellent port.

They also changed a lot of Jessica's outfits because of censorship reasons, so now they just look awkward.

I am almost to the secret final boss in dq 8 3ds. It seems to be a huge game if you want to collect everything in it.

It wouldn't be Dragon Quest without any grinding in it.

And like others have said, this is the least grindiest in the entire series.

Wondering how XI is going to be...

I think that's what it comes down to. I call it a grind if I need to explore 100% and do all side-content in order to stay leveled with the main story. Now, I always do that anyway, so the "grind" doesn't bother me in DQ8. But I mean... if you go straight to Dhoulmagus when the story directs you to, most people are gonna get stomped. Similarly, if you make a beeline for the waterfall in the beginning, which is where the game tells you to go...

Again though, it's mostly semantics to me. I enjoyed the pacing.

Yeah but I just round it to being a dragon quest game that banks on being classical which is what I want from it. Every other game series is trying to change up even turn based games and sometimes the changes are stupid and sometimes pointless...which is stupid so yeah, stupid.

oh I agree, it's a semantic argument over what counts as grinding
the waterfall example you give is a great example. you should be like level 5 or so when you go there, but you will be maybe level 3 if you follow the path

I don't see it as grindy if you explore everything first, but I do see the argument that it is

The only time I felt like I had to grind in 8 was when I wanted Multiheal on Angelo. Other than that it was kinda smooth compared to most DQ games.
