The two best beginner cards are the Citi DoubleCash and the Discover It.
Get both. Use the Discover for 5% cashback on whatever the rotating category is for the quarter (right now it's grocery stores, July - September is restaurants) and use the Citi for everything else to get 2% back.

Those are easy to get and manage. There are better cards, but these are the best for newbies.

depends on a lot of things

what are your goals? good rewards for travel? or just flat cash back?

if you want a card to stun people you're looking at the premium, 500ish dollar a year cards

Chase Sapphire Reserve
American Express Platinum
U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve
Citi Prestige

uh, fucking this:

(its a dumb card, but its gold plated so uh. yeah.)

was thinking cash back but im flexible. dont know much about travel rewards, is it substantial or is it like one shitty plane ticket every other year or something?

right now i have a crappy secured credit card from back when i was in college with no credit history, im ready to upgrade to a Real Man Big Dick Card

with travel rewards, the value is in traveling for sure.

for example, my trip from korea to the united states cost 40000 points one way. however, the cost of that in cash is 2000 dollars.

if i wanted to earn 40k points, i'd have to spend 26666 dollars (since the chase freedom unlimited can get you 1.5 points per dollar spent).

but if i wanted to earn 2000 dollars via cash back to buy the same ticket, i'd have to spend $133,333 just to have the cash in rewards to buy that ticket.

so you can see why i dont really like cash back cards.

i like the chase cards cuz you can redeem the points for cashback or travel rewards (if you have a chase sapphire preferred or reserve)

but the real value comes from sign up bonuses! i got 180,000 chase points last year from sign up bonuses and used them for BUSINESS class tickets to korea. cash value of 8,000 dollars! for free!!
