When Prince Philip retired last year, he had completed 22,219 "solo engagements" since 1952. That's 65 years. There are 23,725 days in 65 years.

I can't even imagine the cold, impersonal contempt they must have for each other.

Being somewhere in an official capacity. It might be opening a new building, meeting a person, meeting the press, going for a coffee morning, visiting a hospital, skiing in the Alps. Could be all day, could be twenty minutes.

I don't feel one iota of sorrow for these people. They live like kings.

All you need to do is not be too racist and make sure you don't marry a Catholic or a divorcee, and you're pretty much set as a member of the British royalty and you get to live a life of utter luxury with regular public appearances. Whoop de doo.

I don't think its an enormous price. 7 official engagements in one week might only amount to 3 or 4 hours of standing around.

I read it as 22,219 / 23,725 days where they've stayed in a hotel, ate 5* food, made to feel important and valuable and busy.
