Never throw straight, if you're not throwing curves then start doing so now and get used to it. Shouldn't take long and it gives a big boost to your catch chances.

Save your stardust and don't bother powering anything up until you're like level 25 or 30. Because the strength and max level of wild Pokemon scale with your level, chances are you'll catch something later that's much stronger than whatever you have now.

I played Pokemon GO for about 5 minutes back when it debuted and got bored with it, and never played the game again.
