I really can't understand paying thousands of $ for a ring

Like the top 3 most expensive purchases in your life will be

1. A house
2. A car
3. An engagement ring

One of those things is not like the other imo

College education beats out the ring and perhaps cars, I'm sure.

Don't buy at Tiffany's. Overpriced and stupid. Don't worry about the 3 month nonsense. That's just marketing by the diamond industry.

If she pressure you to follow either of those, dump her.

For $3k, you're looking at .75 carat. That's more than good enough. Go to Shane Company if there is one around you.

I remember in another topic like this, a poster talked about how his grandfather bought his grandmother a plain band. Every year or so, he would take the ring and set a new diamond and it totaled up to over $10K after all those years (I'm spitballing I really don't recall the price or if it was the wedding or engagement ring). I want to do this, it makes it seem much more personal and makes for a good story.

I was seeing some pretty good prices online like Blue Nile I think like another poster suggested, so I think I'm going to go that route

Blue Nile is also overpriced. I spent $3k on the engagement ring and $1.2k on the wedding ring.

Here's a cautionary tale about buy an expensive ring.

My friend's soon to be ex-husband spent $40,000 on a Tiffany 1.5 carat diamond engagement ring (Certified and all that marketing nonsense). She know I'm good at selling stuff, so asked me to sell it for her and I asked around.

1. Most Jewelry places don't buy diamond rings.

2. If they do, they give you about 20-40% of the retail price. It would be a miracle if they give you 40% and extremely lucky if you get 20%. That's the basically the diamond industry.

Clarity, cut, certification and then Tiffany slap a hefty premium on it. If you buy Tiffany, you're basically paying a big premium because they're such a well-known brand.

Yeah, this is why the only wedding-related thing you spend any serious money on is the honeymoon

Yup and thats why I laugh at people wasting money on engagement rings, the honeymoon is where you should be spending big not for a stupid ring.

Here's an even more outrageous tale.

A friend of a friend spent $500,000 on a ring ($1.5 million on the wedding) and got divorced 6 months later. At his bachelor party, his friends paid the stripper to blow him and he was dumb enough to tell his wife 3 months after the wedding.
