tl;dr
if right wing elected government, quick civil war with federal government winning.
if left wing elected government, potential for lots of military defects and protracted war with a chance of eventual cease fires among multiple parties being signed instead of the elected government winning.

I think it would start with a joint political/military coup after an election or policy is passed. Shortly after this fringe groups will start popping up. Communists, neo-Confederates, Anarchists, various militias with countless ideologies.

Odds are the federal government wins quickly. Most likely case for a large portion of the military to defect is if a left wing is elected president and a large portion of the military defects with them. If the federal government doesn't win quickly and whole regions quickly lose control, then those various fringe groups will eventually turn into 3-5 larger nations with small pockets of resistance in some rural areas that don't recognize their local government.

Hawaii and Puerto Rico declare independence. Alaska and Texas declare Independence in a left wing president, but remain in a right wing president.

Russia, China and other antagonistic nations fund and provide weapons to all rebel groups in hopes to have more Americans dead.

Terrorists from all over the world come and do acts of terrorism.

If it lasts a few years (left wing president with large military defection), the union is unlikely to ever be put back together and cease fires are signed but peace is never made. UN Peace Keepers arrive early on in the fighting but they prove to do nothing. Initially our allies today aid the elected government and send aid but don't send many troops. Once it looks like the federal government won't win our current allies only offer minor aid and site internal strife and instability as the reason. Meanwhile they aid the major government that support their interests most.

Well, one side has effeminate men who are against authority, hates police, and wants to ban guns.

The other side strongly supports the police and military, and every family owns multiple guns.

The bigotry and blind ignorance in this post, combined with that username leads me to assume you're a very pleasant person.

the only way an actual war could break out is if part of the military rebelled. the era when the common citizen could fight back is over. the military is too strong
