It's almost like the two-party political system applied to the arts. Is your story dark, gritty, and (superficially) sophisticated or is it irreverent, whimsical, and self-referential? Only Disney/Marvel really seems to find a middle ground anymore. The problem with this common retort is that it ignore the fact that much of what drives passion and fandom is new content that advances world building. No one ever said 80s TMNT or 2003 TMNT is going away.
