I'm not going to claim or pretend Gamergate didn't have it's fair share of malicious participants. But I do think the anti-GG types who try to paint it as just a hate campaign to bully women and minorities out of gaming are wrong.

I recall, specifically, the brouhaha regarding Shadow of War and youtubers. Anti-GG personalities, like Arthur Chu, tried to say it proved GG was just such a hate campaign because they weren't talking about it. Ignoring the facts that pro-GG personalities were talking about it, it was discussed on pro-GG forums like KotakuInAction, and that TotalBiscuit who was a GG supporter was one of, if not the first, public figure in gaming to bring the issue to light.

this is true. it was pretty dumb of him to hop on the bandwagon, and it was clear that once he was on it he was sort of at a loss once things were co-opted by idiots almost immediately, but from the beginning he really only cared about the journalism aspect of things and not the death-threats-sjws-stealing-our-games-tumblr-killed-my-baby stuff. it's kind of hard to hold it against him too much

He made some jokes. The jokes were taken out of context and blown up as representative of an identity that didn't exist.

He made several disparaging comments towards Otherkin but I honestly cannot bring myself to take Otherkin with a shred of seriousness. They're the Pastafarians of Trans to me.

No one can produce the supposed "Good reviews" that Zoe Quinn received in exchange for this relationship because the journalist in question never reviewed the game, nor did he encourage anyone else.

And furthermore, if the axiom of your outrage is that game journalists are exchanging good reviews for sex of shitty games that might not deserve it, you're wholly fucking misguided.

Where was the Ethics in Gaming Journalism movement when Jeff Gerstmann was fired for reviewing a sponsor's game with a 6.0?

Where was the Ethics in Gaming Journalism movement when Developers get their bonuses cut if their game doesn't get a high enough score on metacritic?

Where were they when Sony flat out fucking lied at E3 regarding the graphics of their first party games EVERY E3?

Nobody gave a shit about the five guys incident when GamerGate kicked off. What caused the movement were all the major sites refusing to allow anyone to talk about it and the influx of "Gamers Are Dead" articles. Most people had no idea anything was happening until that. What the Gerstmann event among others lacked was the Streisand Effect, which is what finally made the masses aware of just how corrupt games journalism was.

Gamer gate talks about actual journalistic problems, but it tended to talk a lot more about getting upset at SJWs or inclusivity or whatever other boogeymen. I think most of the people who actually -did- care about that stuff realized that and moved on away from the main chunk. Thats why you rarely even see the word gamergate anymore but you can still regularly find people screeching about having social politics other than their particular variety in video games.

I'm simply saying that if you actually want to have a meaningful discussion about ethics in videogame journalism, you will have a much more productive outcome by having a discussion about ethics in videogame journalism instead of flirting with the gamergate hashtag.

Because if you do that, you'll predominantly attract people who do not actually want to talk about those things.

That's why it's so fucking hard to talk about men's rights these days. If you try, you'll attract mras whose idea of taking about men's rights is actually just shitting on feminism.

A lot of the early activists in gamergate essentially abandoned the movement a few months in because of this.

I don't know. I think the hard part about talking about men's rights is anytime anyone tries to talk about men's issues without doing it with a feminist lens, they are endlessly vilified by feminist activists. Look at Cassie Jaye, she was metaphorically crucified by feminists because she decided to make a documentary film about the MRA movement.

I can't blame MRAs for getting caught up in their little culture war with feminists when they can't try to have a conversation without feminists pulling fire alarms, intimidating people who try to attend, malign the speakers involved, misrepresent the discussion, etc.

I'm not going to excuse the bad behaviour of MRAs, or Gamergaters for that matter, but I'm not going to pretend the other sides haven't fired a lot of unfair shots either. Or at least I'll try not to, but confirmation bias is a thing that plagues us all.

Apparently his Twitter is protected. So, hopefully some folks have been giving him a ton of shit for being a petty asshole.

Apparently his axe to grind is mostly "TB criticized games I worked on" and "something something Gamergate bogeyman".

That bloke certainly wrote a lot concerning his feelings over TB, wow. That's some pent-up anger because, as I've learned, criticizing a video game you like is the worst crime imaginable. I still don't know how someone can take all the time to write that and think it's still a good idea.

RIP, Biscuit. Life really isn't fair. My grandmother had cancer and she miraculously survived it after a very intrusive surgery...only for her husband to be diagnosed with it afterwards and he didn't pull through. In the words of Saints Row, fuck cancer.
